Patch Picks: Local Summer Camps

Although it's not yet spring, registration for the popular local summer camps is well underway. There is a camp for just about every interest available. This week, five local stand-out programs.

It’s not quite spring, but summer camp sign-ups are already in full swing.

It's best to act early to secure your kids' spot since programs fill up fast.

There is a dizzying array of camp choices. Here are five well-regarded local programs with flexible options for parents, with adventure and learning experiences for children.

1. Town of Danville Recreation Services

Location: Various sites

When: Dates and times vary by camp program

Program: The Town offers full and half-day camps, subject specific enrichment camps, sports and aquatics camps, and teen camps.

2. Devil Mountain Summer Camp

Location:

2100 Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd, Danville

When: June 13-August 5; full day and half day (morning or afternoon) options 

Program: Three camp programs, as well as aquatic center and swimming lessons programs are offered:

  • Summit Seekers is a day camp designed for K-6 graders. It offers arts and crafts, games and outdoor play. Activities change weekly according to that session’s theme. Field trips to the Jelly Belly Factory, zoos, and the Exploratorium are also part of each week’s program.
  •  The Sports Camp program is structured as four and two-week long day camps that exposes children to sports in a non-competitive atmosphere.
  •  Adventure Camp is designed for 5-8 graders and focuses on exploring the outdoors. It features overnight trips to camp on the beach, go house boating, river rafting and kayaking.

3. Camp Galileo Danville

Location:

1001 Diablo Rd., Danville

When: June 20-August 5; Camp hours are Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m.-3p.m., with extended care hours 8-9 a.m. and 3-5:30 p.m.

Program: Designed for k-5 graders, each week the camp will focus on a different theme, including Chinese art and building design, toy inventors’ workshop, impressionist art, and urban art and environmental design.

Plus, a trained clown leads the program.

Camp director, Brady Gill, is a graduate of the San Francisco Clown Conservatory, a longtime veteran of Camp Tawonga, and is currently earning his Master of Fine Arts from the ART Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University

4. TechKnowHow Summer Computer Camp

Location:

1025 La Gonda Way, Danville

When: August 1-12; offers both full and half-day options, with extended care available. 

Program: Three class options by age from 5-14 years old, focusing on computer, robotics, and LEGO and K'NEX building projects.

5. SonSurf Vacation Bible School

Location:

2615 Camino Tassajara, Danville

When: June 13-17 (sign-ups begin in April)

Program: Designed for four year olds through sixth graders, the camp includes activities and Christian education enrichment programming based on the SonSurf curriculum.
