That's a good point. A terrible crime had been committed but what if he was a fry cook? Does being a lawyer somehow make it worse?

"Employment lawyers are mostly extortionist scum." That's a broad brush stroke you're painting there. I don't see any reason to lump employment lawyers all together with Smith and then call them extortionist scum. I'm sure there are bad lawyers and good lawyers, just like in any profession anywhere.

Well, there is news and there are features -- and then there is everything in between. People find this interesting. It's like going to the movies. You can go see a superbly rich art film or hard hitting documentary and like it, but you can also go see Mission Impossible, and like it. But it's different than covering the wars or the economic meltdown, which TIME also does. Or Danville Town Council, which we do. This has been a national story and it's interesting that the parents of one of the most widely talked about magazine covers in recent memory live so close.

I have a hard time accepting broad brush strokes that paint an entire group of people as "scum."
