Fire Hits Home with Over $1 Million in Damages

The Friday night house fire on El Pintado Road in Danville was contained in just about one hour, with no injuries reported.

During a night of lightning striking, fires on Mount Diablo and a red flag weather warning for the Bay Area, a two-alarm house fire in Danville caused more than $1 million in damage Friday.          The fire was reported at a one-story house at 482 El Pintado Road at around 8:40 p.m. It was completely knocked down in under an hour, fire district information officer Kim French said. One person was in the house when the fire broke out. That person was safely evacuated and there were no injuries reported, according to French. The blaze caused about $1 million in damage to the house and another $400,000 in damage to its contents. The cause of the fire has not been determined, although dispatchers at the time of the fire said a lightning strike…

Elizabeth, that's not correct. We live in the neighborhood, we were there when everything was happening, and we saw everything. The fire department took so long to get there. When someone asked why, they said they were dealing with wildfires. Now, they say they were there in 8 minutes? That's NOT true. No, the fire was not completely extinguished in under an hour. Crews kept putting out new flare…   more ›

Summer Anti-DUI Campaign Kicks Off Friday

The CHP announced its plan to beef up enforcement starting this week.

BAY CITY NEWS – Law enforcement agencies in Contra Costa County will be joining nearly 10,000 of their counterparts across the country Friday in an annual summer anti-drunken driving campaign, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said. The campaign, known locally as Avoid the 25, will include checkpoints, roving DUI patrols and a multi-agency DUI task force.   The 18-day campaign will run through the Labor Day weekend and will be carried out on and off highways, Lee said.           In Contra Costa County, there will be about 50 local patrol officers specifically targeting drunken drivers; two sweeps to arrest people with outstanding DUI warrants; and an anti-DUI task force that will focus on the Interstate Highway 680 corridor on Sept. 3…

Reminder: Fireworks are Illegal in Contra Costa County

Even those sparklers aren't allowed.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is reminding residents that the sale, possession and use of all fireworks is illegal in the county. The law even prohibits the use of sparklers and other so-called "safe and sane" fireworks, Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard said. People who have illegal fireworks for disposal can call their local police departments or the fire district's main office at 925-941-3300. People should not take fireworks to fire stations for disposal, Broschard said. This Fourth of July is expected to be hot, windy and dry, which means high fire danger in the county. Broschard said fireworks cause injuries and fires each year. Last year, more than 40 fires caused by fireworks were reported in the fire district's …

The local fire agency is helping its San Francisco counterparts by staffing a station and responding to calls in the Presidio during the funeral for two firefighters killed last week in a house fire.

The pair died of injuries they suffered while battling a fire at a home at 133 Berkeley Way on June 2. Perez died later that day and Valerio succumbed to his injuries June 4. "San Ramon Valley firefighters are honored to pay tribute to the two San Francisco fallen firefighters by covering a San Francisco Fire Station and responding to …

Study Shows Contra Costa County is Most Dangerous for Cyclists

More bicyclists died in Contra Costa County over the past five years than in any other Bay Area county, according to The Bay Citizen.

More bicyclists are killed in Contra Costa County and at a higher rate than anywhere else in the Bay Area — much higher, even, than crowded urban areas such as Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. Twenty-three cyclists were killed between 2005 and 2009 in the rural county compared with nine fatalities in San Francisco during the same time. That's according to CHP reports obtained by The Bay Citizen, a nonprofit news website that published a story on its findings earlier this week along with a Bike Accident Tracker that maps all incidents reported between 2005 and 2009. Contra Costa reported 1,416 bike-related crashes in that time. That's 11.25 percent of the number of bike commuters, more than double the rate for San Francisco and nearly …

Obviously, Ballock's running through that red light wasn't the smartest move he could have made, but, that's just one instance, Jojo Potato. Maybe we need to stay focused on the bigger picture of how drivers and cyclists can learn to share the road without so much of the animosity that exists in both camps. Thanks for the reminder details about that Danville Blvd. accident some years back, Tri …   more ›

Authorities will continue the search at first light Wednesday.  Levitt said the best thing for concerned community members to do is to "continue to get the word out to the broader community," rather than helping with a physical search.  7 p.m. Find Alliy Bayliss Facebook page reaches more than 11,000 fans in about 24 hours. 5 p.m. Bayliss family friend Kevin Sawcheck spoke to the media earlier Tuesday afternoon. Hundreds of Students Wear Blue for Alliy

San Ramon Valley High sophomore Allison "Alliy" Bayliss went missing Monday morning. Tuesday, hundreds of her classmates showed their support for her safe return by donning blue.

When 15-year-old Allison "Alliy" Bayliss went missing Monday morning, the community wasted no time in trying to get her back. Countless students showed up at school Tuesday morning wearing blue – Alliy's favorite color – as a show of support for their missing classmate. "We don't want to lose one of the pack," said 16-year-old San Ramon Valley High junior Bella Ginocchio on her lunch break this afternoon. "We want her home." Bella has never met Alliy. She learned of the girl's disappearance on Facebook. Through classmates, Bella knew Alliy was on the swim team and that before her Monday morning disappearance she left behind a suicide note. The news spread fast. A Facebook page created for Alliy Monday afternoon already has more than 8,600 …

Just offering advanced placement classes puts pressure on kids to take them. When we live in a bubble of so many highly accomplished young people, how can anyone rise to the top? Parents still expect their children to stand out, but when so many kids are gifted, no one stands out from the crowd. I remember a twilight episode from years ago, which is eerily familiar. The community has found a way …   more ›

Former Sheriff's Deputy Charged With Child Molestation Accepts Plea Deal

San Ramon resident Michael Bareno pleaded guilty to three counts of child endangerment this morning, according to prosecutors.

A former Alameda County Sheriff's deputy accused of molesting three children between 2005 and 2009 pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of child endangerment, prosecutor Paul Graves said. Michael Bareno, a 43-year-old San Ramon resident, was sentenced to a year in jail and five years probation. He gets credit for 199 days served, which means he could be released in about a month, Graves told Patch. Bareno was a sheriff's deputy for 15 years before being placed on administrative leave after his November arrest. Prosecutors said he formally resigned a few weeks ago. Bareno was first charged with 10 counts of child molestation. Prosecutors said he molested two boys and a girl in Contra Costa County, all of them under the age of 10. The …

Man Used Helium to Kill Himself

The county coroner is still trying to find family of a man who committed suicide Sunday at the Courtyard Marriott in San Ramon.

A 59-year-old man used helium to kill himself in a hotel room at the Courtyard Marriott Sunday afternoon, police said. The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office had yet to locate the man's relatives as of early Monday afternoon. Where he's from is a bit of a mystery. His most recent address was listed as being in Redwood City, but that was from a while ago and may not be accurate, said Sgt. Tom Larocque of the San Ramon Police Department. County and San Ramon Valley hazardous materials crews evacuated three stories of the hotel Sunday evening to test the air for what type of asphyxiant the man used. Clearing out the hotel was mostly a precaution, according to Larocque. "No one else was in danger," he said. "Most everything we did was …
