BAY CITY NEWS – San Ramon Valley firefighters staffed a San Francisco station as thousands of people gathered late Friday morning at the funeral for two firefighters who died after fighting a blaze in the city's Diamond Heights neighborhood last week. Family, friends and firefighters from around the country are attending the services for Lt. Vincent Perez, 48, and firefighter-paramedic Anthony Valerio, 53. The pair died of injuries they suffered while battling a fire at a home at 133 Berkeley Way on June 2. Perez died later that day and Valerio succumbed to his injuries June 4. If you see a firefighter in pink this month, it's not because they mixed up their red suspenders in the wash. It's for a cause.
If you see a San Ramon Valley firefighter wearing pink this month, they're showing their support in the fight against breast cancer. Now through the end of the month, San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District firefighters and staff will don pink shirts to help raise breast-cancer awareness, in the hope that more women will detect the disease early through regular screenings. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women, according to the American Cancer Society. That means one in eight women will develop breast cancer. Dr. Robert Litman, who lost his 19-year-old son in the June 22 blaze, told firefighters he's grateful for their help saving his life.
Physician Robert Litman lost his son in a fire last month that would have killed him if firefighters hadn't arrived in time. Though June 22, the night when a fire destroyed the family's Blackhawk home, is forever in Litman's memory as a tragedy, he said he's grateful to the firefighters who saved him from the smoke which killed 19-year-old Benjamin Litman. "How do you thank someone who saved my life?" he asked Wednesday night at a San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District meeting where eight fire fighters were awarded medals for their work that early June morning.
