Michael Bareno, 43, a sheriff's deputy in Alameda County, was arraigned today on 10 felony counts of child molestation.
An Alameda County sheriff's deputy who lives in San Ramon was charged in court today with 10 counts of child molestation. The Contra Costa County district attorney is accusing Michael Bareno, 43, of molesting three children younger than 14 years old. He is being held at the county jail in Martinez in lieu of $4.6 million bail. Prosecutors say Bareno – a veteran sheriff's deputy – molested children between 2005 and 2009. Before his arrest, Bareno had worked at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and was a deputy for a decade. Since San Ramon police took him into custody, Bareno has been on paid leave. WALNUT CREEK – A 40-year-old Danville man accused of downloading child pornography videos onto his thumb drive has another month to prepare for his preliminary hearing after a judge this morning agreed to another month's delay to give attorneys time to study the evidence. Michael Vawter, who worked as an insurance broker in San Ramon before his mid-March arrest, showed up in a Walnut Creek courtroom today for his short proceeding. He didn't speak, except before and after in conversation with his private attorney. Both sides agreed they need more time for forensic analysis before they're ready to present the facts of the case. Michael Vawter will get assigned a date for his preliminary hearing.
A former Danville Cub Scout leader accused of downloading child pornography is due in court Thursday to set a date for a preliminary hearing. Michael Vawter, 40, pleaded not guilty a month ago to a felony charge for allegedly using a peer-to-peer file-sharing software to obtain child porn. He was arrested in March, but remains free after posting $20,000 bail. Once Vawter schedules a preliminary hearing, the next step will be for Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Dana Filkowsky to present the case before a judge, who will decide if there's enough evidence to go to trial. The hearing will take place at the Walnut Creek Superior Court.

The way I read it. A city is accusing him of something (yes, it's terrible), not his employer. He might have a bunch of vaction time built up. The artical does not say, a city employee is being given free vacation pay while off of work after being accused of doing something at work. Nor does the artical say he is being given free vacation pay by his employer, the county.   more ›
