Route of Amgen Tour of California will ascend to the shoulder of the big mountain.
Some of the top bikers in the world will match sweat ascending Mount Diablo in May and hopefully get a chance to admire the view on the way down. There was an announcement Wednesday that, after years of requests from local bikers, the Amgen Tour of California would go up South Gate Road from the Danville side and down North Gate Road on the Walnut Creek side. "It's a recognition of this great ride," said Rafael Rojas, manager of Performance Bicycle Shop on North Broadway, Walnut Creek. "It's an iconic place for us." The attention to the big race of professionals should bring attention to the big local race, the Diablo Challenge, said Rojas. The challenge is 11 miles up the big mountain, organized by Save Mount Diablo, scheduled for Oct. 7 …

The 90th Minute, a film looking at the challenges professional women soccer players face, will be shown at Dougherty Valley High on Friday.
If you drive around the San Ramon Valley and the Tri-Valley on a weekend it doesn't take long before you see girls playing soccer. It is the most played sport for girls in the area, with a relatively large number receiving scholarships to play in college. But even with the sport growing in popularity, not just here but around the country, it has yet to translate into a successful women's professional league. This is the topic of Jun Stinson's documentary film, The 90th Minute, which will be shown at Dougherty Valley High at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with professional soccer players on the state on the women's game. Though the film was first released in May 2011, it's importance is more timely than …

Social media networks were set aflutter with the hint that Matthew Broderick may be reprising his Ferris Bueller role in a Super Bowl ad on Feb. 5. “How can I handle work on a day like today?” he says in the opening frame. With just a few days before the big game, commercials are a hot topic, along with whether Eli Manning or Tom Brady will be the hero of Super Bowl XVLI. According to businessinsider.com, 2012 will go down as a banner year for the event. The top price NBC got for an ad is $4 million, and on average, the network sold 30-second spots for $3.5 million each. Just about everyone has a favorite Super Bowl commercial. Betty White would never have been introduced to Facebook or the “Saturday Night Live” audience were it not for …

C'mon, let's face it. When our team isn't in the Super Bowl, watching it is more about the snacks than anything else.
The San Francisco 49ers lost to the New York Giants two weeks ago. That's not a news flash (though it might be fore some people). Whether it's a photo of your Super Bowl Party Spread, your "super" bowl of popcorn (get it?), or the hot wings you ordered from the bar, you should snap a photo with your phone and send it to us. You can …
