More Charges Expected Against Former Danville Officer

Feds announce they will seek more charges against former Danville Officer Stephen Tanabe

Poll: Should Norm Wielsch Appear on Dr. Phil?

Judge ruled out LA trip to Dr. Phil McGraw's television show for police corruption defendant.

Contra Costa's most famous criminal defendant wanted to go on the Dr. Phil show in Los Angeles and get some therapy. One federal judge granted the permission for Norm Wielsch. A second one Monday said not so fast. Wielsch is the former czar of a Contra Costa drug enforcement squad, who is free on $100,000 bail. The judges can't decide. Maybe it's up to the Patch readers to deliver a verdict. Hence this poll. Snafu update: The original poll posted with this story was misleading in implying that Wielsch was to receive an appearance fee for appearing on the Dr. Phil Show; he was not, according to Wielsch's lawyer. The poll answers have been revised to reflect that. Patch apologizes to those who wasted their votes on the original poll!

Poor guy. I wonder how much sea-faring experience he had. Going out into the open ocean at night in a 19 foot boat is very risky and dangerous. I went on a commercial fishing trip once in that same area. It was nice and sunny on shore, but when we got a mile out, the waves were about 10' tall, and everyone got sea sick.   more ›

Another re-action-ary response to people enjoying themselves! These folks would have us all cocooned in bubblewrap, cowering in our attics for fear of the dangerous world. Society maybe has the responsibility to inform citizens of potential danger (road signs) but certainly not the job of eliminating them all. Where's the fun in that?   more ›

What Exactly Is A 'Promiscuous Shooting'?

It's been asked to us several times so we decided to shed some light on what exactly a "promiscuous shooting" is.

Each Monday the Danville Police Department sends Danville Patch an "incident summary report," which is a summary log of calls placed by residents or actions taken by officers throughout the week. You then read our summary on it that we call the police log. Each Monday, when pursuing this log, a phrase pops up that has left us scratching our heads and our readers asking us questions. That phrase is "promiscuous shooting." Both words -- "promiscuous" and "shooting" -- are fairly provocative that will absolutely perk someone's ears up. So to get a definition of what exactly a "promiscuous shooting" is, we sat down with the Danville Chief of Police Steve Simpkins. What we found out wasn't nearly as provocative as the two words may suggest. …
