My house backs up to Cross Road. I can't wait to set up a couple of chairs and sit outside with myRead More ice tea and snacks and watch the race go by with my family. I will be avoiding downtown completely but still get to see the race.

This article did not compare this team to any other sport or to the men's team. I don't thinkRead More anyone would disagree that the competition is very different but that wasn't the point of the article. Your commentary is unnecessarily critical and only serves to rob the girls on the team of praise. Find something else to do with your life than to pick on high school girls.
Tom April 22, 2013 at 01:18 pm
Good luck girls but lets be clear. The scores indicate there is very little competition and thisRead More sport for girls at this point is not very mature. Girls soccer is VERY competitive but Rugby is not. There are a very small amout of teams that play this game at a very strong level because Rugby is just not yet very popular for girls compared to say track/basketball or soccer. At the college level it is just as bad. Every year we see the womans NCAA womoens basketball tournament and there are maybe four teams that have any chance and there are tons of blowouts as there is just very little competition. The truth is in most HS ANY girls that walks on and wants to try out for Rugby will make the team. NOT the this particular team but most of them. Bottom line good for the girls here but you really cant compare their accomplishments vs the boys as their path to championship is far less difficult.

Great story! Can't wait to see how they do in Nationals!

Rick Eymer made a "bush league" grammatical error that should have been caught. SeeRead More paragraph 2: "Since signing a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers in 1981, Melvin HAS RODE a roller coaster of success and failure." Even a sports reporter should know better than this.....

Bob Melvin is the best thing to happen to the A's in MANY years! Love him and the team! HowRead More appropriate it is that the team's "Root Beer Float Day" every year benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation! Most important of all: KEEP THE A'S IN OAKLAND!!!

MissA. . . . Thank you! Shame on the NFL/Gatorade. . . . I too was under the impression it was forRead More the loyal Safeway customers to celebrate the Grand Re-Opening. . . . I could barely get in/out of my neighborhood. . .. heard sales were BAD!
MissA March 11, 2013 at 12:51 am
Safeway posted the times he was set to be there....it was on the doors at each entrance and it wasRead More supposed to be a neighborhood event for loyal customers who have shopped there for 10-15 years as a tie in with the Grand Re-Opening of the newly remodeled store.... Instead...,The NFL posted it on Facebook and it turned into a huge CF, with NONE of us locals getting in to do our shopping or even being able to park their car, causing havoc for all of the other businesses in the center....Safeway LOST revenue and pissed off its customers ....Even the staff couldn't get to work on time...some had to park a mile away......

OK MV you won this round but the Wolves will be back. Nothing wrong with being proud of your schoolRead More and even though we are rival we respect MV. Well played here Mustangs.

My feeling is that the NFL attracts a booze-filled out of control element that is much lessRead More prevalent at MLB or NBA games. Security is always an issue at events with lots of people, but the NFL seems to have an overdose of this. The Raiders fans have gotten a bad rap for this over the years, but I think that whole thing has spread to all franchises (yes, the Raiders were ahead of their time). No - $25 tickets won't do it for me, but then again, I am a baseball fan.
Mike S February 12, 2013 at 02:45 pm
I wondered how long it was going to take for ticketmaster to figure this one out. BrilliantRead More marketing ploy - the tickets will be bought up by scalpers and then resold for $40 - $50 a piece. The Raiders will get their sold out stadium and the scalpers become unofficial ticket agents. You don't think this is true? lol...look at what happened to the Warriors 200 section seats behind the baskets at the coliseum. The employee/team that designed this promotion is surely up for a promotion - well done.

Nope.

Palomar, Well said comment! There should have been an early pass-interference call on the 49ers asRead More well. If the refs had been making calls in the early game, players would have had to play by the rules throughout. Instead they let there be numerous late whistles and late hits (where one guy had the runner stopped with a tackle and then other guys were allowed to hit him--very physically dangerous and with game-changing possibilities of injuries and fumbles) and also over aggressive shoving/fighting after the point (mostly started by the Ravens). I thought the officiating was poor and changed the nature of the game. Wasn't this almost the fewest penalty calls that these teams have EVER had? (I'd like to hear those statistics.) Did these teams change that much from their previous season play that they now weren't doing penalties? I doubt it.
Palomar Parkman February 5, 2013 at 12:39 pm
The game was very entertaining for fans of both teams. That is why you watch. The 49ers played likeRead More a young team. Flashes of brilliance and moments of stupidity. The non-calls by the refs changed the ebb and flow. Their performance was pathetic and that is supposed to be the 'best' ref crew the NFL has to offer. Bad calls and non-calls never even out. I expect to see the game played by the rules. I am not sure what the ultimate outcome would have been if it was properly officiated but it most definitely would not have been the same game I watched. What a disgraceful display by the NFL on their biggest stage.
P February 4, 2013 at 08:45 pm
It's is VERY hard to get into the Super Bowl in the first place. So the idea that the 49ers areRead More going to definitely get back there next year is wishful thinking at this point. It's unlikely, but I hope they do!
Albert Rubio January 29, 2013 at 04:03 am
The NFL is a business after all.
Dan Perez January 29, 2013 at 02:37 am
My wish is that some (ok, a lot) of the commercialization be taken out of the superbowl. It can beRead More sickening. Too many time outs; long ones that can mess up momentum. I am very impressed with Jim Harbaugh's coaching. With the exception of the Seattle game, he was pretty awesome this year.
Jack Rux January 24, 2013 at 04:04 pm
Thanks Kristofer. I have feeling this will be a really good Super Bowl. The key is for the playersRead More of both teams not to get caught up in all the hoopla. A line from one of my favorite country songs "Come From the Heart" sums up what's needed: "You gotta dance like nobody's watching." Even if you there are billions. And I think the 49ers will do that enough to win.
CJ January 22, 2013 at 05:51 pm
I am getting jacked for that as well. Go RV2 and RD5! BTW-Is anyone else sick and tired ofRead More RayLewis' act?? It is such bad acting and so disingenuous. Just stop already. You're a thug and we all know it

It's amazing how many folks know so much about sports and don't have a clue about how our governmentRead More in Washington and even here in Danville are messing with our lives. Go 49er's on Super Sunday... Wow...Super Sunday

Alamo and Danville need a real brewery or sports pub to watch the games. Every place in the area isRead More too small and crowded.
Just Sayin January 15, 2013 at 01:42 am
My son has played for LJFL for the past 5 years and PJFL for 2 years. I asked him before writingRead More this about leading with your head on a tackle...his response was "thats stupid you NEVER lead with your head." I don't know which coach taught that you should EVER lead with your head was, but we have never encountered such stupidity.. I just think it's a really bad idea to wait until high school to "try" football. By the time these boys play high school football, they are big boys, and they are going to hurt someone who has never taken a hit! If they learn the right way to play when they are all still a little smaller it's a lot safer.
Tom January 14, 2013 at 06:15 pm
The other factor that people seem to miss is most HS sports coaches are some of the poorest in theirRead More field. I know when I played sports we all had private coaches and our HS coach left us alone and just made sure we trained. He was smart enough to not screw up what real professional coaches were doing. Of course there are some exception but most HS coaches are there for a reason, they are not good enough to go to the next level and make better money. This is hard reality in all sports but the stakes are so much higher with football due to the much higher risk. I also think this sport more than most (maybe not all) has a huge HGH and other PED problems that still very bad. So for me this is a no brainer Football is out. I have no issue with those that are fine with their own child playing though.
Michael Delfino January 14, 2013 at 05:55 pm
I wish what Livermore-Dad said is 100% true and I'm sure that's their goal, but students of mineRead More have told me that coaches with LJFL, GHS and LHS have all taught them to lead with their head on certain types of tackles. I'm sure if this teaching style can be proven, the coach would be removed, but I guess that proving it isn't exactly high on the priority list. Having said that, I would not allow my child to play football until he's older, but not because of injuries, but the attitude it instills. The "they want to take what's yours!" mentality that I've seen of many coaches/players. Uh no, they don't want to "take what's yours" they want to do the exact same thing you do, win a game! I'm all for healthy competition, I think it brings out the best in people--when approached the right way. Given the current climate of youth football (which I believe is a trickle effect from the pros, down to college, down to youth), I do not see how it promotes growth as a human being, but rather satisfying the parents' need to live vicariously through their child.
Wayne Cochrun January 5, 2013 at 03:48 pm
During during Bob's tenure DLS was the best coached football team in America, at any level. TheRead More names of the players changed but the fundamentals and techniques never changed!!! And football IS fundamentals!!!! Wayne Cochrun, former footall coach for 43 years in Southern California.
Jack Tono January 4, 2013 at 11:19 pm
He's a good recruiter
Jack Weir January 4, 2013 at 09:07 pm
Our son Drew played for DLS for four years, and was on the varsity team that maintained the 151-gameRead More "Streak." At the football awards ceremony his senior year, Coach Ladoceur commented that Drew was "a very good influence on our team." I can think of no higher compliment. I know Bob will continue to teach and coach young men to become upstanding and responsible members of their community.
Bill January 9, 2013 at 03:21 pm
Would like to think committing to win, with integrity, does carryover for more than just DLSRead More winners. But I doubt it's more important than kids having positive role models in many, if not all aspects of their lives. Sometimes it's a coach, sometimes it's a dance teacher, sometimes it's a parent...or, even better, sometimes all 3.
jim January 8, 2013 at 05:10 am
it feels good to win- much better than losing. It is a reflection of the hard work put in and isRead More the reward for being good. It is not life or death, but very little really is. My view is, if you are going to do something, then give it your all. If that causes you to win- so be it. If not- then at least you gave it your all. In DLS case, just very impressive that kids can operate at such a high level and play the top talent in the country and compete-- congrats to a great program. If you ever played in a freiendly game of baseball, a pick up basketball game or a Thanksgiving Day football game-- you know why it is important to win-- because you dont want to loose- you dont plan on loosing and you dont practice to loose. That attitude will carryover into the balance of these kids lives and make them more successful at whatever they do in the future...
Tom January 7, 2013 at 07:12 pm
I agree with Jack but have a different take. Why in the world is it so important to win HS footballRead More games? I know many current and former DLS kids and they are good kids and most are also good students but I have never understood why ANY sport could be that important.
ROBERT E. FISHBACK April 29, 2013 at 11:17 am
A little off subject, but.....The Jets released Tim Teboe and that is the best thing for Tim andRead More hope he gets over the royal screwing he got from incompetant coaching staff.
mike gregory January 9, 2013 at 11:03 pm
I don't care if you recruit or what 151-0 is a feet that's beyond believable or 399-25, and heRead More stoped playing teams in a division to travel and play the best in the country, and he still won won won
Gemini21 January 7, 2013 at 11:22 pm
My passion is valid. Calling a person naive shows your ignorance with your facts on this subject.Read More I live here and know how it works, but most of all have hands on knowledge. Yep, they don't have to recruit and recruiting from "all over the U.S." as you implied previously is "naive".
Michael Dodge January 5, 2013 at 05:55 pm
I started at DLS in 79 and had him as my religion teacher, he was a fantastic teacher, I rememberRead More working out with him when I wrestled.. He was bench pressing more then anyone back then.
