Route of Amgen Tour of California will ascend to the shoulder of the big mountain.
Some of the top bikers in the world will match sweat ascending Mount Diablo in May and hopefully get a chance to admire the view on the way down. There was an announcement Wednesday that, after years of requests from local bikers, the Amgen Tour of California would go up South Gate Road from the Danville side and down North Gate Road on the Walnut Creek side. "It's a recognition of this great ride," said Rafael Rojas, manager of Performance Bicycle Shop on North Broadway, Walnut Creek. "It's an iconic place for us." The attention to the big race of professionals should bring attention to the big local race, the Diablo Challenge, said Rojas. The challenge is 11 miles up the big mountain, organized by Save Mount Diablo, scheduled for Oct. 7 …
Worchester Polytechnic Institute has a new school record in the men's 4X400 relay thanks to Austin Holliday, a former San Ramon Valley grad.
The record books at Worchester Polytechnic Institute for track have a San Ramon Valley High School twist thanks to Austin Holliday's effort in the 4X400 relay late last month. Holliday, a 2011 grad, helped the 4X400 WPI team set a new record in men's track and field from the team's showing in the Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University. The team was competing against teams from Division I, II and III schools. The squad of Joey Collins (Standish, ME), Kyle Morette (Leominster, MA), Stephen Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) and Austin Holliday (Danville, CA) clocked a time of 3:20.61, qualifying them for the Division III New England Championships. Route of Amgen Tour of California in May will include the shoulders of the devil mountain.
Contra Costa biking nuts have been saying for years that the Amgen Tour of California should include our little biker heaven — Mount Diablo. This year that dream comes true with an announcement from the Tour of California that the route will roll across the shoulders of Diablo on May 15. Watch Patch for a more detailed account later today.
The 90th Minute, a film looking at the challenges professional women soccer players face, will be shown at Dougherty Valley High on Friday.
If you drive around the San Ramon Valley and the Tri-Valley on a weekend it doesn't take long before you see girls playing soccer. It is the most played sport for girls in the area, with a relatively large number receiving scholarships to play in college. But even with the sport growing in popularity, not just here but around the country, it has yet to translate into a successful women's professional league. This is the topic of Jun Stinson's documentary film, The 90th Minute, which will be shown at Dougherty Valley High at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with professional soccer players on the state on the women's game. Though the film was first released in May 2011, it's importance is more timely than …

This is the 33rd year Danville has honored the scouts for National Boy Scout Week.
Scouts really can start campfires without matches or a lighter, according to soon-to-be Eagle Scout and San Ramon Valley sophomore Ryan Mahoney. "There are a few different ways but yeah, we can," the 16-year-old said. He said all you need is a pocketknife, a flint rock and a good amount of tinder -- small sticks or leaves that can easily catch fire. "You can strike the pocket knife on the flint and spark the tinder," he said. Or you sharpen two sticks and rub them together to create friction, thus creating heat, then smoke, then fire. Easy enough? No, probably not. But, for Mahoney, as an Boy Scout from troop 805 in Danville, no problem. This week is National Boy Scouts Week, as designated by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It started …

A federal appeals court in San Francisco found that Proposition 8 — passed by California voters in 2008 — violates the 14th Amendment guarantee of equal protection under the law.
From Bay City News Service A federal appeals court in San Francisco today found Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage, to be unconstitutional. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled by a 2-1 vote that the voter-approved measure violates the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment guarantee of equal protection under the law. The ruling does not allow same-sex marriages to resume immediately. The appeals court said its decision will be on hold until it issues a formal mandate, which gives the initiative's sponsors time to appeal and seek a stay from either the full 9th Circuit or the Supreme Court. The appeals court's ruling is narrow and applies only to the state of California. The court said that …
Judge ruled out LA trip to Dr. Phil McGraw's television show for police corruption defendant.
Contra Costa's most famous criminal defendant wanted to go on the Dr. Phil show in Los Angeles and get some therapy. One federal judge granted the permission for Norm Wielsch. A second one Monday said not so fast. Wielsch is the former czar of a Contra Costa drug enforcement squad, who is free on $100,000 bail. The judges can't decide. Maybe it's up to the Patch readers to deliver a verdict. Hence this poll. Snafu update: The original poll posted with this story was misleading in implying that Wielsch was to receive an appearance fee for appearing on the Dr. Phil Show; he was not, according to Wielsch's lawyer. The poll answers have been revised to reflect that. Patch apologizes to those who wasted their votes on the original poll!

Kim: This is a good point you make, "They also learn how to be leaders." On the outside, looking in, the first thing I think of when I think of scouts is campfires and tying knots. But it's much, much more than that. (Wish I would have stuck with it!) I would like to see other parents of scouts chime in, too, on this topic, but have you ever witnessed, or can you speak to your children equating …   more ›
