Orinda Academy

Small in comparison to Orinda's public school population, Orinda Academy is home to fewer than 100 students; but they all seem to be thinking big. The private, co-ed academy clings to an Orinda hillside and serves students in grades 6-12, many of whom live within a 50-mile radius of the school, and nearly all of whom have their sights set firmly on college. The school has a sizable contingent of international students and prides itself on its "innovative and challenging" college preparatory program, a path to higher education compatible with UC college entrance requirements as well as four-year colleges and universities around the world.

The academy offers honors courses in U.S. history, biology, American literature, and British and Western literature, as well as advanced placement courses focusing on mathematics and science. Although the school is physically small and space at the Orinda campus comes at a premium, students at the academy make use of its on-site fitness center and other off-site facilities to engage in a number of athletic endeavors, including fitness training, basketball and mountain biking.

The academy's Educational Adventures Program has taken students to Japan, Russia, Costa Rica, Greece, Turkey and the Galapagos Islands among other locales. The school, the second of its type founded in the early 1980s (the first is in Marin County), began its inaugural academic year in Orinda during the fall of 1982 with 26 students. It moved to its current location on Altarinda to take advantage of an increase in available space and proximity to local mass transit.
