Call for Kid Volunteers to Pack Backpacks for Kids in Need

For the sixth year, two local sisters are working to provide backpacks and school supplies to kids who need them. They are getting set to prepare their Packs with Love backpacks and are asking for kid volunteers.

While many San Ramon Valley students will be heading to school with new backpacks this fall, filled with required school supplies, many children in other Bay Area communities are not so fortunate.

Two Danville sisters, , decided to make sure that fellow kids aren’t left out, and also get the basic supplies they need.

Since 2006, the sisters have collected donated new and gently used backpacks, and school supplies as part of their project.

Each fall they invite other kids to volunteer to prepare the backpacks.

This year, the Mascalis have invited kids to come and help pack over 300 waiting backpacks at their home on Aug. 17 from 10 to 11 a.m.

The packs will be given to students in Richmond, as well as to foster kids through Shelter, Inc., and the program Teen Challenge.

Volunteers will fill the backpacks and write encouraging notes to send with them.

The Mascalis say that they are often told the notes are very important to the kids. “They keep them all year long, knowing that other kids their age are thinking about them and think they are special,” say the sisters.

The Mascalis stress that no parents are allowed to help — this is strictly about kids helping other kid s— and encourage parents to drop off their kids at the supervised event. They will be working in their driveway.

To get involved, RSVP by emailing packswithlove@yahoo.com .

The Packs with Love packing event will be held on Aug. 17 from 10-11 a.m. at the Mascali home, located at 651 Dunhill Dr., in Danville.
