Danville Gets Sustainable – Earth Day Celebrations Abound Around Town

Round up of Earth Day Celebrations in and about the Danville Area.

Celebrations for Earth Day, Sunday April 22nd are beginning early – which only seems fitting as Mother Earth deserves more than one days’ recognition.

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, which gave voice to the environmental concerns of people across the United States, the day is now celebrated world wide in over 160 countries all over the globe.

To make sure you don’t miss out on ways to be green and celebrate sustainably, we put together a list of local events.

This is the second year the town has hosted this event in conjunction with the art gallery to showcase green-minded artists and educate the community about the sustainable practices that are used in their work.

This will be the final day to view Linda Colnett’s Trees from Trash sculptures from the last exhibition Branching Out. This will also be the only day to view the artwork of local Danville and Alamo K-12 students who created posters for the Earth Day Art contest with the environmental theme of “Our World, Our Community.” Final day to submit art entries is Tuesday, April 17th – for details visit http://sustainabledanville.wordpress.com/2012-earth-day-student-art-poster-contest/

Where:  The Town of Danville Village Gallery   233 Front Street Danville

When:  11:00am – 5:00pm. This is a free event and registration is not required. All ages are welcome!

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Film screening of Manufactured Landscapes in the Village Theatre; this 90-minute, Non-Rated, documentary filmed by Jennifer Baichwal ostensibly provides a thought-provoking investigation of photographer Edward Burtynsky's legacy, with its aesthetic studies of industrial landscapes. It uses the topic of Burtynsky as a springboard into a protracted exploration of the aesthetic, social and spiritual dimensions of industrialization and globalization.  The picture raises some significant and sobering questions about the impact that we, as humans, make on our environment.

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Join Shimmer Jewels, artist Amanda Emery, in creating a one of a kind recycled jewelry project. Bring an old T-shirt or article of clothing to make your own braided fabric bracelet!

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Watch local art instructor Jean Cernigoj, create a mosaic piece using old dishes and broken treasures.

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
A reception honoring the finalists from the Earth Day Poster Art contest will be held. Thanks to the generous support from Danville Area Sustainable Business leaders; Bill White Allstate Insurance, Green Apple Acupuncture, Cottage Jewel, Jules Thin Crust, Junebug Bakery, Danville Chocolates, and local businesses Sweet Street, Art on The Lane and The Studio our finalists will receive cool EcoLunch Boxes with local goodies.
