San Ramon Nixes July 4, 2013 Fireworks

Council vetoes display again; too costly, troublesome were past complaints.

To firework, or not to firework.

For the second year in a row, San Ramon City Council last week voted down hosting an aerial fireworks display on July 4, 2013, as part of the city's annual "Star-Spangled Spectacular."

One of the few city hold-outs in recent years to even sponsor Independence Day fireworks, San Ramon opted out for its upcoming 2013 holiday.

In 2012, the same action was taken with officials electing a new event — called "Celebrate America, Celebrate San Ramon" --  without fireworks.

The fireworks display was historically a point of civic pride for San Ramon, which had hosted the show since 1985, shortly after its city incorporation.

Safety concerns and associated costs -- such as the all-day payroll of needed police, fire, maintenance and monitoring personnel -- added to the decision.
