On Wednesday, the girls -- sisters Sydney Chu, 8, and Emme Chu, 7; the McCormac sisters of Megan, 11, and Kaylan, 7; and Abby and Alyssa Gonzales -- followed the caboose of the parade and collected the empties.

The Warburg sisters Ella, 12, and Honor, 7, who are also involved in the project weren't able to make it to the parade Wednesday.

Sherman Chu, the father of Sydney and Emme, said the effort pulled in about 10 bags, or 42 gallons, of recyclables.

We'll update you as this project unfolds through the summer.

Also, if you'd like to help the girls out with your empty bottles and cans, send an email to Sherman Chu at sherman@shermanchu.com.

Correction: A previous version of this story stated the Ella and Honor Warburg were at the parade on Wednesday. They weren't. This version corrects that error.
