Update: 'Not Ideal' Timing for San Ramon Valley High Firing Football Coach

A letter to the parents of varsity football players doesn't explain the sudden termination of Coach Mark Kessler.

Updated 8:35 p.m. on Nov. 18

San Ramon Valley High fired head football coach Mark Kessler one day before his team took the field to play their first round game in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs.

Kessler was fired on Friday for undisclosed reasons, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

He was replaced by Wolves assistant coach Aaron Becker.

A letter went out to parents of football players last week. Here's the letter in full:

Mark Kessler will no longer be serving as the Varsity Head Coach/Program Co-ordinator for the SRVHS Football Program. Effective immediately, Aaron Becker will be serving as the interim Varsity Head Coach/Program Co-ordinator.

We are well aware that the timing of this shift in leadership is not ideal, but we have every confidence that our coaching staff have prepared the team well for the NCS game this Saturday. I know that our student athletes will rise to the occasion and make SRVHS proud.

San Ramon Valley High players learned about the dismissal before Friday practice, the Times reported.

Further word on why Kessler was fired went unanswered.

Despite the turmoil, the sixth seeded Wolves defeated 11th ranked San Leandro High, 42-24, on Saturday night.
