Monte Vista Stuns San Ramon Valley, 34-33

Makay Redd hit a 27-yard field goal with less than 10 seconds left to lift the Mustangs to the win.

As far as the San Ramon Valley High student section was concerned, Thursday night’s rivalry game against Monte Vista was over with a minute, 35 seconds left in the game.

That’s when SRV kicker Matt Anderson hit a 22-yard field goal to give the Wolves a 33-31 lead.

It wasn’t.

Oregon-bound quarterback Jeff Lockie responded by leading the Mustangs on as impressive a two-minute drill as fans can ever expect to see from a high school player. The drive started at the Monte Vista 25 and Lockie completed 5 of 7 passes for 44 yards, ran for 18 and put the team in position for a game-winning field goal — all with no time outs remaining.

Makay Redd calmly nailed a 27-yard field goal with 9.4 seconds left and the Mustangs won 34-33.

“It’s a typical San Ramon-Monte Vista game,” Monte Vista coach Craig Bergman said. “There are very few laughers on either side and you know its going to come down to the last snap like it has so many times.”

Lockie finished 24 of 40 for 267 yards, with a pair of TD passes and a 1-yard TD run.

“The thing that separates Jeff is that he can run around and make plays,” Bergman said. “He can throw it really well, but he’s also so dangerous with his feet and with his head.”

Cal-bound Zach Kline had a masterful fourth-quarter drive of his own for San Ramon. The Wolves took over at their own 32 trailing 31-30 with 3:57 left and Kline marched the Wolves deep into Monte Vista territory to setup Anderson’s field goal. Monte Vista used all three of its time outs on that drive and it preserved just enough time for to respond.

“Zach Kline did a great job moving them down and scoring and I knew we had a lot of time on the clock,” Bergman said. “We run a lot of no huddle, so Jeff wasn’t going to panic in that situation.”

The Mustangs (6-4, 5-2 EBAL) took an early 3-0 lead, but trailed for most of the game. It wasn’t until a 1-yard TD from Lockie with 4:05 left did Monte Vista retake the lead.

That TD run was setup by a 45-yard halfback pass from Troy Johnson to Marco Zamora.

Johnson caught 10 passes for 146 yards and Dan Scritchfield caught 10 for 82. Zack Chang ran for 88 yards on 16 carries.

Kline finished 17 of 25 for 242 yards, but the Wolves were carried by running back Jordan Weiss. Weiss ran for 256 yards on 25 carries and scored on runs of one and 18 yards.

The teams finish in a second-place tie in the East Bay Athletic League standings behind De La Salle and will find out their North Coast Section Division I seeds on Sunday.
