Four Mustang Soccer Teams Set to Begin Far West Regionals

Teams open up play Monday in Albuquerque, N.M.

For Mustang Soccer Club girls coaching director Patrick Uriz, having four Mustang teams at this week's United States Youth Soccer Far West Regional soccer tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., is an accomplishment in itself.

But for a club as successful as Mustang has been over the years, Regionals can sometimes serve as just a step toward Nationals.

All four squads who won state cup titles — U-13 Mavericks, U-14 Fury, U-15 Blast and U-16 Rampage — have qualified for Regionals before.

"For the club it means we're continuing to move in the right direction," Uriz said. "It takes a lot for a club to get here."

Each age group features three groups of four teams. Similar to the World Cup, each group has a round-robin phase which will be completed by Wednesday.

The top-two teams from each group automatically advances to the single-elimination portion of the tournament and the third-place team from two of the three groups advances as well.

The quarterfinals will take place on Thursday, the semifinals on Friday and the championship games will be on Sunday.

The skinny: Expectations are high for the Rampage as they return the the Western Regionals after getting knocked out in group play last year.

"I'd be wrong if I said we were here not to win the whole thing," Owen said. "Our first goal is to win our bracket, it's pretty competitive but we feel we're playing a good style of soccer right now."

The Rampage relies heavily on a pair of talented forwards in Briana Gaines and Celeste Boureille.

"(Gaines) is a force to be reckoned with," Owen said. "She's a strong, physical player who does a good job with the ball."

Bourielle provides a little different look up top.

"She's just a real smart, savy player with a good soccer IQ," Owen said. "Techincally, she's very clean and can breaks opponents down on the dribbles and get get behind the defense.

The Ramage open up group play with a game against Sereno (Ariz) — a team it is familiar with being in the same national league.

Owen said Sereno probably holds a small edge lifetime, but expects his team to play well tomorrow.
