Danville's Roy Helu Makes Most of First NFL Start

The rookie caught a Redskins-record 14 passes in their loss to the 49ers.

San Ramon Valley High graduate Roy Helu had a memorable first start to his NFL career Sunday, catching a Washington Redskins record 14 passes for 105 yards in a 19-11 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

“To be honest,” Helu told the Washington Post, “I don’t care [about the record 14 catches]. There were other plays like the fumble I had that take away from that. … The stats look good, but I had the fumble, and that was the biggest difference in the game score-wise. Just can’t have that stuff.”

After graduating from SRV in 2007, Helu spent four years at the University of Nebraska, where he ran for 3,404 yards and 28 touchdowns. In his senior year, he caught just five passes, but as QB John Beck's safety valve Sunday the Danville-native showed his versatility.
