Baseball: SRV bats silent in loss to Foothill

Hochstatter's performance spoiled in 3-0 loss

When John Hochstatter pitches as well as he did Friday, San Ramon Valley High baseball coach Chris deClerq expects the Wolves to win.

Despite allowing just three runs in a complete-game effort, Hochstatter was tagged with the loss as San Ramon fell to league-leading Foothill 3-0.

"He pitched well enough well enough for us to win," deClerq said. "We just didn't get the big hits when we needed them."

The Wolves best chance came with one out in fifth when Joe Love drew a walk before Max Dutto and Ben Fishman singled to load the bases against Foothill ace Will Anderson.

"We were a hit away from two runs," deClerq said.

Unlike Thursday when the Wolves got some clutch hits in a win over Cal, the big hit didn't come Friday.

A softly hit liner followed by a strikeout killed the Wolves' rally hopes and Anderson didn't allow a base runner over the following two innings.

"This was a huge," Anderson said. "We're trying to take the (East Bay Athletic League) and games like this will keep us in first.

San Ramon (10-6, 3-3 EBAL) would have moved into a first-place tie with a win over Foothill (12-4, 5-1).

The Wolves host rival Monte Vista on Wednesday before beginning the second half of league play on Friday against De La Salle.

"We've talked about trying to peak at the right time," deClerq said. "In every game we've lost this year, we've had a chance to win. We've played well enough to win, but to win (consistently) in this league you have to get some big hits."

Monte Vista 5, De La Salle 2: Kevin Strong threw a complete game five-hitter and Ryan Lacy hit a three-run homer as the Mustangs snapped their six-game losing streak at home.
