SRVHS Track & Field Breaking Records

San Ramon Valley High School's diverse track team is currently undefeated and is already breaking records halfway through the season.

When some people think of track & field, they might wonder why anyone would choose "running" as a sport.

In baseball, footbal, or soccer, the mention of running laps may be followed by complaints and looked at as a punishment, but for track runners, a day without running is rare.

The field portion of this sport often gets overlooked because it is not the first thing you see when you go to a meet or see a team practicing, but it is important to the team.

Traditional high school track & field consists of five groups, each with several individual events.  The main groups are sprinters, long distance runners, throwers, jumpers, and pole-vaulters.

Sprinters compete in events such as the 100 and 200-meter dash, the 400-meter run, and a number of relays.  Long distance runners race in the 1600-meter or mile run, the 800 and 3,200 meter run, as well as relays, mainly at invitational meets.  Throwers can choose from shot put or discus.  Jumpers have a choice of long jump, triple jump, or high jump.  Pole-vaulting is the only straightforward event, with no other options.

Many students at San Ramon Valley High might think that track should not be taken seriously because it is a non-cut sport — the team willingly accepts whatever athletes decide to show up each year. However, every person on the team is challenged to keep up with the rest of the team, and to make it to the top of the pack, you must train hard.

So far this year, San Ramon's boys and girls track teams are both undefeated, with four more duel meets to go leading up to the East Bay Athletic League finals.

At every meet, first, second, and third place in varsity events receives 5, 3 and 1 point, respectively, for individual events.  For relays, first place is the only team that receives 10 points.  At the end of the meet, the points are tallied and the winner is declared.

Most recently, a select number of athletes headed to Clovis for the West Coast Relays. Here are results from that track meet:
