Did I Buy a Ticket to the Zoo?

In the span of one hour, I had seen: 3 chickens, a great blue heron, prairie dogs, hawks, a white egret, cows, goats, turkeys and a duck!

One morning, a few weeks ago I was heading out to do a few errands. The first thing I did was say a quick, “good-bye” to our three chickens: Mother, Raven and Braveheart. I also waved a “see you later” to Henry-the great blue heron, (see past blogs) who was perched on the patio chair. This is normal right? talking to your pets?

Anyway, I head out down the road and hear the, “gobble -gobble” of nearby turkeys. I then see, (I always look for them) a family of prairie dogs laying low on the side of the road. Continuing down Crow Canyon, there are several light posts with red-tailed hawks perched high on top...just waiting. Right off the side of Hwy 680, I am treated to the sight of a white egret!  Then I see the cows grazing high atop the hills, and the goats all gathered in the corner, next to a fence with a stack of cut wood. My final stop...I am greeted at the door by a group of wild turkeys!

When I arrived home, the “visiting” duck was in our pond taking a nap, and that’s when it hit me....where am I? In the span of one hour I had seen: 3 chicken, a great blue heron, a family of prairie dogs, several red-tailed hawks, a white egret, cows, goats, turkeys and a DUCK! This is one of the many reasons why I love this area. You can get a funny feeling...as though you just might have... bought a ticket to the zoo!
