SRV Students Break World Record for Wearing Sunglasses in the Dark

The rally also recognized winter sports and sophomore Lulu Cuny discussed her muscular dystrophy.

students broke the Guinness Book of World Record for having the most people wearing sunglasses in the same place -- the gymnasium --- in the dark this afternoon, according to organizers

The previous record, yes there is a record for this, was 500.

"We broke that record because we had 1,000 sunglasses and we passed them all out," said freshman class president Nick Friedler, 15, an organizer of the event.

But it wasn't 1,000 students packed into a pitch black gymnasium. The rally was done as a black light event with students wearing items and body paint that glowed in the dark.

"We wanted to do something new with the rally and I thought black light would be cool," Friedler said. "I always wanted to do something with black light."

The rally also recognized SRV's winter sports, including both boys and girls soccer who will be playing in the North Coast Section finals on Saturday, and bringing awareness to muscular dystrophy.

Sophomore Lulu Cuny, 16, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy last year, gave a heartfelt speech about her experience and her frustrations with the disease.

Cuny told the audience she loved sports but when she went out for track last spring, after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, she went home that night in excruciating pain. The family then went to the hospital.

"The doctor recommended that I should never play sports again," she said.

Cuny said she was giving up something she loved. "It was frustrating," she said.

But she was able to connect the sunglasses in the dark to her life and the lives of her students.

"The lights are off, it's dark and with the sunglasses, it's even harder to see," she said. "My sunglasses is muscular dystrophy... Think about the darkness in your life. You might not see through it but there is light at the end of the tunnel."
