School District Announces New Superintendent

Mary Shelton is expected to be confirmed as the new superintendent of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District on Wednesday.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District announced its one and only finalist for the superintendent opening on Monday.

Mary Shelton, currently the chief accountability officer for Sacramento City USD, is expected to be confirmed by the school board as the new superintendent on Wednesday.

She takes over July 1 for Steve Enoch, who announced in March he was going to retire after four years in the job.

A Contra Costa Times artice gave a short bio of Shelton:

Shelton worked as a computer programmer for Chevron in New Orleans before becoming a math teacher at Jesuit High School, a Catholic school in Sacramento. She then became an assistant principal there.

She moved to the public school system when she became principal of John F. Kennedy High School in Sacramento, from 2001 to 2006.

In 2006, she went to work for the Sacramento City Unified School District as an administrator in various capacities, and is now the chief accountability officer responsible for supervising school sites. She also serves as the acting superintendent in the superintendent's absence.

Shelton will be paid $240,000, which was the base pay Enoch made this year, board president Greg Marvel told the Contra Costa Times.

"She's a change agent," Marvel told the Times. "But she's not going to make change for change's sake. She's going to continue our forward momentum to make this district even better."

Some links on Shelton. Bottom of the article in first link refers to her willing to take on teachers (union?). A small but good sign! Maybe she is a "change agent". Let's hope! http://www.sacbee.com/2011/09/04/3883748/priority-schools-improving-priority.html http://www.cms-ca.org/schools.htm http://www.scusd.edu/district-staff/mary-shelton I

And she has a math teaching background; and has experience in private non-union schools. More good signs. Wonder what her relationship is with Michelle Rhee's studentsfirst.org ((alsovSacramento based)
