Registration Now Open for Parenting 2011 and Beyond Conference

The San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs is presenting its annual conference Feb. 26, featuring keynote speaker and author Jane Nelson, Ed.D.

The San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs is helping parents, educators and community members be better mentors to children and teens through its Parenting 2011 and Beyond conference. 

Registration is now open for the conference scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26 in San Ramon.

The event's keynote speaker is author Jane Nelson, Ed. D, who has co-written the bestselling Positive Discipline series of books. Nelson is the mother of seven and employs a “firm and kind” empowering approach rather than punitive measures, she says.

In addition to the keynote presentation, attendees can attend two small group seminars. Topics include:

  • Ten things you should know about sensory processing and your child (special needs), presented by Susan Marcus OTR/L.
  • Anger: How to turn down the volume of anger in your family, presented by John Schinnerer, PhD.
  • Auditory processing disorders (special needs), presented by Dr. Deborah Ross-Swain, CCC-SLP.
  • Combating bullying through social skills (special needs), presented by Preston Jones, owner of Keeping Kids Safe.
  • Ending bullying: Building a community of allies, presented by Lynn Bravewoman, safe and inclusive schools educational consultant.
  • Girls will be girls: Understanding the social and emotional dynamics of girls ages 6-15, presented by Torie Henderson, parent educator.
  • Learn how six-figure families get thousands of dollars of free endowment scholarship money for college, presented by Dan Everstz, college endowment scholarship expert.
  • Love yourself: The first step toward a successful relationship, presented by Dan Beaver, MFT.
  • Parenting through connection, presented by Lauren Cattolico, prevention and treatment specialist, M.A., and Jim Holley, MFT, M.A., and Stacey Touhy, intern, M.A.
  • Parenting wisdom, presented by Paul Lewis, MFT.
  • Positive discipline—tools you can start using today, presented by California high school psychologist Heather Cantero, M.S., NSCP.
  • Sensitivity in the gifted child (GATE), presented by Julianne Zvalo Martyn, educational consultant.
  • The intentional family, presented by Laura Taggart, MFT.
  • Transition 101: Transition—For all of us! (special needs), presented by Doug Dildine, deputy director NorCal Transitions.
  • Understanding social networking/cyber bullies, presented by Police Officer Steve DeWarns, founder of Internet Child Safety.
  • Unravel the mystery of language processing disorders (special needs), presented by KayLynn Neal, M.S., CCC-SLP.
  • What’s up with my son: Understanding the emotional life of boys, presented by George Papageorge, MFT.

The San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs’ Parenting 2011 and Beyond conference will be Saturday, Feb. 26 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at Dougherty Valley High School, 10550 Albion Way, San Ramon. The cost is $35 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
