Neil Armstrong Elementary to Remember Fallen Hero

In July of 1969, Neil Armstrong did what many considered impossible just a few years earlier — he walked on the moon.

About a month later, San Ramon needed a name for its new elementary school. The community voted and the elementary school was given the name of America's newest hero.

has been teaching generations of students since. This week, with a new school year begining Tuesday, the school will teach its students about the man their school is named after and his legacy.

after complications following cardiac bypass surgery. He never visited the school, but wrote the school a letter after the school was given his name.

"We are all very saddened," Neil Armstrong Elementary School principal Lorna Monteith said. "We want to remember his strong character and to take this opportunity to teach our students about him and the importance of having good character."

An assembly is planned later in the week and the students will be shown a clip of Armstrong's historic first steps on the moon.

"I read the family statement over the weekend and we're going to remember him the way they wished," Monteith said.

The flags will be flown at half mast at Neil Amrstong this week and throughout the on Friday.
