From Danville to Motocross to Columbia University's Valedictorian

Former Danville grad named valedictorian at Columbia University and is coming back to the Bay Area.

Maxwell Bertolero took an interesting path from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District's Venture School to racing motocross to giving the valedictory address after graduating from Columbia University.

And he's on his way back to the Bay Area to work on his PhD in cognitive neuroscience at UC Berkeley.

Though Bertolero suffered from depression, his parents said, it didn't hamper his passion and he overcame.

"Venture was such an important piece in our sons path," Bertolero's parents said in an email message. "We will never be able to thank Venture and his teacher Mic, enough. I thought Maxwell's school might want to see where he is today and possibly share his story with your current students and the community."
