Class of 2010: Monte Vista High Graduates

On a sunny Friday afternoon, hundreds of proud family members and friends turned out to support the more than 500 students of Monte Vista High's class of 2010.

A few tearful mothers lamented over the thought of losing their kids after graduation. But they were no doubt also proud of their kids and their friends, who would be the freshmen at Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Duke, MIT and Stanford in the fall, and three seniors who will soon serve our country in the military.

As a hushed silence fell across the crowd and a band led by Edward Cloyd struck up "Pomp and Circumstance," the graduating class of 2010 marched proudly. As the last of the class trickled in the school's Beauty Shop Quartet led by Katie Turley stunned the crowd with a beautifully sung rendition of the "Star Spangled banner."

Barbara Burg, the second interim principal this year, recognized the exemplary contributions of two retiring teachers, Patty Cruthers and Judy Shackleford, who were both adored by students and had a combined 76 years of teaching at the school.

Senior Alexandra Curtis delivered a speech relating how everything about the school, from its great spirit, to the amazing people helped inspire excellent habits in her life. Hao Tran also addressed fellow seniors and how they always inspired him to do his best.

As Burg took the stage again to begin awarding diplomas, nervous smiles were exchanged among the students.

"I'm exited to finally be able to do what I want, whenever I want to," said Brian Snapp, who will be attending college in southern California.

Frantic cheering was punctuated with clanging cowbells and the short, sharp blasts of bullhorns as about one hour passed, names were called, and diploma after diploma was awarded.

When class president Samantha Branman was awarded her diploma, she shook Assistant Superintendent Jessica Romeo's hand, walked to the mic and faced the crowd. Branman's witty remarks and unique simplicity seemed to touch the students and bring them back to their high school days, as she yelled "we did it!"

As 533 caps were launched skyward in what looked like the flight of awkward black birds, accompanied by thundering applause, there was a moment of hope—that Monte Vista High's class of 2010 will make a difference, save a life, or even change the world.
