The Girl Scout Blog: The Father Daughter Dance

This years girl scout Father Daughter Dance was held on Feb. 11. The proceeds will go toward the Kiva organizations.

Recently, my Girl Scout troop hosted our annual father daughter dance. As far as I know, this dance is a time honored tradition shared by scouts, girls, and fathers, especially in our troop. My freshmen year of high school, my friend and I were assigned to plan the dance. Being so inexperienced, we were not entirely sure of what to do, but we tried our best, and the dance was a success. We spent innumerable hours picking out the right color scheme (yellow and lavender), renting tables and chairs, and making cookies and appetizers.

Four years later, I am amazed to watch our new troop members put on the dance. This year the theme, "The Royal Ball", permitted younger girl scouts to show off their fanciest dresses and spend a lovely evening out with their fathers, or other special date.

For the first part of the dance, I was in charge of taking the special photos of the girls with their dads, so I literally got to see every girl, and all of them seemed overjoyed to spend time with their dads. However, the second half of the dance, my friends and I danced with the girls. We started the caterpillar and managed to get nearly all the girls (and some dads) to join. At the end of the night, I am fairly confident all the girls were quite satisfied with the dance.

The father daughter dance is important for our troop because this is how we make the majority of our troop money. (We also encourage girls to bring canned food to the dance to donate). At the end of the year, our troop collaborates and decides how we should spend this money. This year, our troop decided to use the money to support women who needed loans through the organization Kiva.
