Will Roosters be Banned From Private Yards? Planning Commission to Consider Tuesday Night

The planning commission will consider rules for the numbers of chickens and roosters allowed in private yards at Tuesday night's meeting.

Has the crow of your neighbor's rooster woken you up at 5 a.m.? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. Over the last year, Danville has received complaints from residents about roosters and chickens kept by their neighbors.

A town report attached to this story cites complaints of early morning noise, odors, and chickens escaping from their coops and into the neighborhood.

In response to complaints, the Town Council considered revising its poultry ordinance in February. The planning commission will review the revised ordinance Tuesday night, passing it on to the Town Council for a final review after Tuesday's meeting.

The proposed amendments prohibit roosters on residential property and set a maximum number of hens to be kept on private property. The town is suggesting a limit of 10 or 20 hens for single family homes in residential districts, depending on the size of the lot.

After Tuesday's meeting the recommendation will return to the Town Council for a formal review.
