Final Presidential Debate: California Political Insiders Say Who Won

State party leaders pick the winner of Monday’s presidential debate in Patch’s weekly survey.

Patch surveyed influential California partisans after Monday night’s final presidential debate and, like the candidates themselves, they seemed to agree on little.

As expected, people mostly sided with their own party's candidate. Among Democrats, 11 of the 13 respondents named President Obama as the clear winner.

On the Republican side, four said Mitt Romney overwhelmingly won the debate while 10 of the 18 respondents said he won by a slim margin. Of all the respondents surveyed, the answers were split, with both candidates receiving 14 votes each for the debate win.

The Patch surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population, but are an effort to listen to a range of local Republican and Democratic political insiders, activists, leaders and elected officials in California. All the individuals who took part in the survey agreed to answer questions after each presidential debate.

Other points of interest of the survey:

  • While Romney’s “binders full women” was the buzz quote of the previous debate, Obama’s “horses and bayonets” comment went viral this time. When Romney said the U.S. Navy is "smaller now than at any time since 1916,” Obama countered, saying:

“You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed."

  • Both Democrats and Republicans pointed to that comment as a standout moment. One Democrat wrote that the Democrats will be “energized” following Obama’s comment. But one GOP respondent wrote that Obama’s comment was “ridiculous.”

“CA Conservatives love their military and Obama doesn’t…it’s easy,” the Republican respondent wrote.

  • Other key moments for GOP respondents were Romney’s criticisms of Obama’s “apology tour,” his responses on policies in Russia, Iran and Israel -- and his five-point plan for economic recovery.
  • Democrats said Romney often did not have a clear, distinguishable stance from Obama, with one writing, “Romney agreed with everything Obama was doing.” One Democrat respondent said a key moment was Obama’s comment that Romney’s foreign policy is from the 1980s, his social policy from the 1950s and his economic policy from the 1920s.
  • Both parties agreed the national media would portray Obama as the winner. On the Republican side, 38.9 percent said Obama would be declared the winner by a slim margin, versus 22.8 percent believing Romney would be narrowly declared the winner.
  • Republican respondents were divided on whether Romney’s performance would increase the number of votes he wins in California, with 27.8 percent saying they “strongly agree” it would, but 30.3 percent saying they were neutral on the topic.
  • 69.2 percent of Democrats said they “strongly agree” Obama’s performance in the final debate would positively affect the number of California votes he receives.

Patch will be conducting Red California and Blue California surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of Republicans and Democrats on the ground in California. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Sandra Oshiro.

i get replys im all fox news. not so i watch business channels cnn. msbc etc watch local news internet news fox news im retired. i read the contra costa times etc. my personal opionion is this. you can read the news papers watch the media news. .. one simple question. example the contra costa times said vote for jerry brown. not meg whitman he will balance the budget not raise taxes 2010. ok you all voted for jerry brown govener. now 2012 he has ballot measures prop 30 others prop 38 some one else, i forget so many . but its tax increases. this is my point in 2010 the contra costa times said jerry brown and all democrats on the ballot vote for them not meg whitman. now 2012 . the contra costa tiimes says vote no against prop 30 prop 38 jerry browns govenesr plan taxes to balance the budget and democratc behind it.. but then they say again vote for all these democrats again . read it, its true.. you got to remember our senate and legislater are controlling your future. these same guys democrats put these tax hikes ballot on the voting ballot. yet the contra ccosta times says no against them , but the they say vote more democrats in that put tax raises on the ballot .. you like bigger taxes on your homes its comming there going to toss out prop 13 you goiung to like to pay maybe 3 times higher house taxes. wewlcome jrry brown left california last term as govener 1,5 billion in debt .. lol you all forgot i did not im a independedt voter
W October 24, 2012 at 03:41 am
Robert your backpedaling, then you rolled over and played independent voter. Sounds like Romnesia.
Tom October 24, 2012 at 01:37 pm
@W nice use of DNC talking point. Fox News is of course a partisan right station. Check that against the ABC/CBS/NBC and to a greater degree CNN and then way off the deep end MSNBC and you can see why they are so popular. The networks and then CNN created a void that Fox filled.

My goodness, all I can say is that Robert is the best argument for Obama, and his strong support of education. (I know Romney takes credit for MA schools, however, they were top before he took office, and according to many, remained top in spite of Romney).
robert October 25, 2012 at 01:40 am
i just think its so funny i have upset all you liberals and democrats. california is going down . roads falling apart in cities and terrible on freeways, cities going bankrupt. city , county , state people retiring abusing the system, you continue to put in democrat politicans in both houses, and then you get more taxes on the ballots to vote for. democrats know how to balance the budget taxes. im voting for them all .. you deserve what you get. stupidity is in common sense gone. i got e-mails saying i was wrong on issues. well see. 4 more years of the same leader ship in washington will bankrupt this counrty and you all deserve it stupidity.. i dont care i just laugh. your all enjoying the good times , there ending soon.. your 401 k's will be good for memories as you get taxed to pay for all the public pensions you allowed to happen. obama loves you all california democrats and liberals.

So what your saying is that FOX is intellectual and doesn't feed your anger and fear instincts. The media isn't political it's owned by big corporations your narratives are stale, 20 years stale. The corporate media is not independent, nor does it check facts, not cost effective.
Speaking of fact checking it was FOX that replaced it with what they called their brain room. There is a room somewhere in their headquarters that thinks for everyone at FOX. And you have a problem with other media outlets. REALLY!

Upset, Obama is going to be president for 4 more years. Then Madam President Clinton will be sworn in. Really who else has more experience in the entire United States then current Secretary of State to be the next president. I also think Bill will make an excellent first lady! Robert have a great night, sweet dreams.
Larry Kinslow October 25, 2012 at 02:25 am
Hey Robert, don't you read your posts before you hit "submit". You're the one that sounds rattled to me. No matter if Obama wins or loses, you're still pretty ignorant.
Fred Eiger October 25, 2012 at 02:28 am
Obama's true colors (no pun intended) came out on Monday; he is a clueless, cold and bitter punk who doesn't like America and certainly doesn't belong in the Oval Office. He has no clue about the dangers that face this nation. He's ready to sell out out to Putin, Chavez and Castro. This jackass sat there while Daniel Ortega railed against this country. Any other American would have walked out. But this SOB SAT THERE!! He's a disgrace and will tossed out in two weeks. I can't wait.
Larry Kinslow October 25, 2012 at 02:32 am
I've been around for 64 years and I have never come across a "bigger jerk" than you. It's really unbelievable.
W October 25, 2012 at 03:08 am
You can't hide behind the word pun as if making it more intellectual makes it any less bigoted crap from the dark heart of a racist fool.
Publius October 25, 2012 at 12:17 pm
Oh great, now we have to add the term "true colors" to the ever-growing list of ordinary words and phrases that we are no longer able to use.
Somebody should compile an official reference list so there will be no more confusion.
Larry Kinslow October 25, 2012 at 12:22 pm
Don't need a list. You should just know!
Larry Kinslow October 25, 2012 at 12:30 pm
If Fred would show his "true colors", then it would read "pun intended". I have no problem with "true colors", now there would be a problem if it read "true color"!
Janice P Ellis October 25, 2012 at 12:37 pm
Don't count your chickens before they hatch, Fred. But, while we're on the subject of just SITTING THERE, I can recall Dubya doing that very thing for seven full minutes on 9/11 as our great country was under attack. I may be going out on a limb here, but, I THINK that classroom of children and their teacher would have understood that sometimes storybooks can get interrupted when there is a national emergency.
I certainly don't know Obama nor yourself personally (which is the only valid way we can honestly cast our judgments and opinions of others), but, just from reading your PLETHORA of remarks here, I would venture to guess that you are many of the things you accuse Obama of being. I'll leave out the "punk" remark though. My guess is you were going for the Clint Eastwood effect with that one, complete with the extreme facial sneer. I haven't had the warm and fuzzies for every single president, but, I've always had respect for them as our commander in chief. Besides, it's pretty difficult to have a good day with a lot of toxic beliefs floating around in your brain. But, I suspect you already know that.
robert October 27, 2012 at 12:43 am
larry kinslow. ill stand by what i read. barrack obama and michelle aboma lost there law licences. i read barrack obama lost his in 2008 bar application problem. michelle lost hers after a federal judge gave her a choice surrender her license or stand trial for insurance fraud, 1993. i know you stated it was just a voluntary surrender a minor thing. i would like the truth. . here is my idea darn i wish our president would take donald trumps offer 5 million dollors to his favotite charity if we all can see your sealed records. see all your stuff your hidding lol lol
Summer Hemphill October 27, 2012 at 01:14 am
The problem here, "robert", is that what you have posted here is false according to this site--
http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/barackobama/a/Obama-Law-License.htm So is there anything else you want to post about this, especially because what you have posted thus far is untrue?
Larry Kinslow October 27, 2012 at 01:19 am

Yes Robert, what ever you say Robert. That's just the site I go to, as do a lot of other folks, to dispel rumors, hoaxes, etc.
Larry Kinslow October 27, 2012 at 01:46 am
Donald Trump is a joke! I have an idea, why doesn't his cheap ass donate the money anyway. From what I've read, he's pretty frugal when it comes to donations.
According to Obama, Trump has held a grudge ever since their childhood days growing up in Kenya together. Well, that's what he told Leno. HA!!
robert October 27, 2012 at 01:48 am
larry kinslow golly gee wow you got the obama truth site. i bet obama has his 20 page plan to fix the economy for us there next 4 years he is waving around there to.. lol i bet you read it there to tiger.
