Emken Vs. Sen. Feinstein in November

Republican challenger and Danville resident Elizabeth Emken got enough votes for second in the U.S. Senate primary and will face off against longtime Democrat U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Elizabeth Emken rose to the top of a pool of more than 20 challengers going against longtime U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein in Tuesday's primary.

Feinstein, 78, ran away with the vote but Emken, 49, was the one challenger who grabbed second and will face off against Feinstein in the Nov. 6 general election, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

As of 12:15 a.m., Feinstein had knocked out 49 percent of the vote (1.3 million votes) with 56.8 percent of the statewide precincts reporting.

There really wasn't going to be a question on that. Who would face Feinstein, however, was the mystery.

Emken, so far, has notched 12.4 percent of the vote (357,896 votes). A distant third is Dan Hughes with 6.6 percent (189,860).

Shortly after midnight, Emken tweeted:

So grateful to all of you for your support. Tomorrow (or is it today?) starts phase II of #RetireFeinstein! #CASen

Emken's campaign spokesman Mark Standriff told the Contra Costa Times Tuesday that the early results were "testament not only to a great candidate but a great campaign."

Contra Costa Times, June 5:

"We've put ourselves in the right place at the right time, and we're looking forward to ... having an interesting, compelling race starting tomorrow against Dianne Feinstein."
