Dublin Mayor Will Face Danville Mayor For State Assembly

Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti is being endorsed by outgoing District 16 Assemblymember Joan Buchanan.

Dublin Mayor Tim Sbranti announced his candidacy for the District 16 State Assembly seat on Thursday.

Sbranti joins a crowded field for the seat, which is currently held by Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo), but she's termed out in 2014. Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich and Orinda City Councilman Steve Glazer have also announced their intention to run for the seat.

The district includes Lamorinda, Walnut Creek, Danville, San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore.

Sbranti's background is in education, being a classroom teacher at Dublin High School, his alma mater, for 15 years. He was first elected to the City Council in 2002 before becoming mayor in 2008 and was re-elected in 2010.

A number of prominent local politicians came out in support of Sbranti's canidacy, including the current seat holder, Buchanan.

"As an educator, Tim understands the challenges our schools face and the importance of education to improving our economy," Buchanan said in a press release. "As Mayor of Dublin, Tim understands the challenges of our cities of ensuring our quality of life and attracting new businesses. He also understands the need to be fiscally responsible and live within our budget. His knowledge and experience will prove to be valuable assets in the assembly.”

Along with Buchanan, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, State Senator Mark Desaulnier and Congressman and former Dublin City Council colleague Eric Swalwell all endorsed Sbranti last week.
