50 Million Americans On Food Stamps

Poll: What does this tell us about America?

It's a good bet that you or someone you know gets food stamps.

One out of every six Americans now depends on this federal assistance program, New York Times reporter Jason DeParle told National Public Radio in a recent show about poverty.

The question is whether this is a new type of federal handout or a proper response to recession, foreclosures and joblessness.

DeParle tells NPR:

"Some people would say it is bad because dependency is on the rise because people are on food stamps . . . I think there's also a strong case to be made in the opposite direction, that this is a safety net program that has responded to the worst economy since the Great Depression."

Your heart goes out to people in this position. But I am also disgusted at the government encouragement of this increased dependency. The absurdity is that there's no money to possibly pay for it. The US is borrowing $4 out of every $10 it spends. One would almost think they are trying to fulfill on the 60's radical's strategy to overwhelm and collapse the system.

Is there a solution? Is there a middle ground? Or just cut it off?

I think there's so many factions. agendas, etc, you have to cut across the board. Every dept gets 10%, 20, 30% less. But, in my dream world you drop all depts that are not constitutionally enumerated and are supposed to be left to the states. Out goes the Dept of Energy, Education, HHS, HUD, Interior and Labor.
