Car Stolen in WC Leads CHP on Lengthy Chase

Teen arrested in chase that began in Walnut Creek, followed Interstate 680 south, and ended in Cupertino.

A teenager was arrested Thursday afternoon after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase that began in Walnut Creek and ended in Cupertino.

The CHP received a report of a reckless driver at Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek at 12:54 p.m., Officer D.J. Sarabia said.

A patrol car pulled up behind the driver, a male juvenile, at 1:13 p.m. driving south on Highway 680 near Andrade Road in Sunol, about 25 miles south of Walnut Creek, according to the Contra Costa Times. The driver accelerated and eventually went northbound on Highway 280.

The chase continued at speeds of between 90 and 115 mph until the driver sideswiped two cars, rear-ended another and hit the center divider on northbound Interstate Highway 280 just south of De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino, Sarabia said.

Officers arrested the suspect and determined that the car he had been driving was reported stolen out of Walnut Creek.

No injuries were reported as a result of the chase or crash.

Two lanes of northbound Highway 280 just south of De Anza Boulevard remained blocked as of 2:30 p.m. as CHP officers conducted an investigation.
