New Police Chief Appointed

Steve Simpkins, a 16 year veteran of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office has been selected as the new Police Chief, expected to take his post in August.

The town will have a new police chief in August, with Steve Simpkins slated to be at the helm of the 30 sworn officer police force.

Simpkins, a 16-year veteran of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, is currently serving as a Watch Commander for the department, covering operations for the Sheriff's Office during non-business hours. 

He will be Danville's fifth Police Chief, since the town was founded 28 years ago and began a contract with the Sheriff's office for town police services.

The appointment comes after a lengthy review process by town officials, including Town Manager Joe Calabrigo.

"Steve has a well rounded background in law enforcement and is committed to public service.  I was impressed with his sincerity, communication skills and his commitment," Calabrigo said. "I believe that he will be a great fit for our community and our police department."

Simpkins, 39, also worked in field operations, custody services and assignments in Orinda and San Ramon.  He earned a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership from Chapman University and an associate of science degree in Criminal Justice from Solano College.  He lives in Clayton with his wife, Kristen, and their four children Jenna 9, Jack 6, George 4 and Brett 1.  

Simpkins is expected to assume his new post with Danville in August, succeeding Chris Wenzel. Wenzel was chief for seven years and is returning to the Sheriff's Office as Commander for the Administration Bureau.
