Fourth Bore Nearing Completion

Installation and testing of safety systems begin in October.

Testing for life-safety systems in the Caldecott Tunnel will begin in October preceding the much-anticipated addition of the fourth bore, which is set to open later this year.

Fire safety, communication and traffic operation systems will be installed in the first part of October with testing to follow, according to the project website.

Jet fans and overhead alert systems are noticeable changes to the tunnel. In addition, state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems have been installed.

If all goes to plan, the systems will gain certification in early December and will open by the end of the year.

The $405 million dollar project will help to alleviate major traffic issues for commuters from the hills of Contra Costa to Alameda county.
