Fire That Destroyed Cabin Near Mt. Diablo Under Investigation

Seventeen engines, three trucks, a helicopter and other equipment, firefighters were able to control the blaze in about an hour.

Fire personnel are continuing to investigate what caused a two-alarm blaze that destroyed a log cabin near the entrance to Mount Diablo State Park on Tuesday afternoon, a San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District fire marshal said today.

The fire district received reports of what was originally believed to be a tree fire in the 2600 block of Mt. Diablo Scenic Drive in Diablo around 3 p.m., Fire Marshal Christina Jamison said.

Arriving crews quickly discovered a cabin-like rental home in flames on a property that contained two other homes, Jamison said.

Crews from the San Ramon Valley fire district and Cal Fire attacked the blaze, which gutted the rental home and burned 2 to 3 acres of brush, she said.

With 17 engines, three trucks, a helicopter and other equipment, firefighters were able to control the blaze in about an hour.

The home destroyed by the fire is not currently being rented, and no belongings were inside, but the damage is estimated to be about $750,000.

No injuries were reported.

Jamison said the property owners had cleared the brush around the homes, which helped firefighters control the flames.

The fire marshal said the incident is a reminder to those who live near wildlands to create defensible space around their homes.

Thank you for this post. As a parent of two at SRVHS and one at Stone Valley Middle School thisRead More whole thing concerns me greatly. I just have not had the time to look into it. My Junior at SRVHS is in the guinea pig class for the new curriculum. The new curriculum started with AP Biology this year and it has been a disappointment. Parents, including myself, really need to educate ourselves on this. I thought this was a State program not a Fed program. Great...
