As a memorial grows on the side of El Capitan Drive, a community mourns the loss of 17-year-old Robert Orlando, who was set to start his senior year at San Ramon Valley High on Tuesday.

Orlando spent the last day of summer fishing with friends before the fatal accident, which occurred blocks from his home, according to a video on KTVU.

A sign that reads "Robert O. SRVHS Class of 2014 Misses You," is posted in front of the damaged tree the car crashed into Monday night on El Capitan Road, near Claridge Drive.

Flowers and cards surround the sign, and a golf club with a photo of the San Ramon Valley High Gold Team lays on the ground in front of the tree.

Stephanie Hein, a junior at Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, grew up with Orlando.

"We've been going on vacation together ever since we were babies ... He lights up the room and can always put a smile on someone's face ... He was an amazing person," Hein said in an email, referring to her friend in the past and present.

The first day of school at San Ramon Valley High was marked by a moment of silence for Orlando.

Two other boys in the car at the time of the crash, ages 17 and 16, suffered broken bones but are expected to survive.

Danville Police are looking into the cause of a single vehicle crash.

Robert is survived by his parents and two brothers, according to Bay City News.

The family asks that any friends who wish to send messages, photos or videos of Robert be emailed to weloverobert2013@gmail.com
