The evacuation area at Hoyer Hall in Clayton Community Library was quiet Monday afternoon, with empty green cots and unopened snacks while Red Cross volunteers mused about the heat at the top of Mt. Diablo.

As of Monday afternoon, the blaze swallowed up 1,500 acres on the eastern side of Mt. Diablo.

The evacuation area opened Sunday night, with four people seeking refuge at the facility, said American Red Cross public affairs officer Jim Mallory.

The shelter, located at 6125 Clayton Road in Clayton, will be open for the next two days at the minimum, Mallory said, serving three meals a day.

The Red Cross helps disaster victims by providing safe shelter, hot meals, essential relief supplies, emotional support and health services like first aid.
