Patch Picks: 5 Retro Date Destinations

Are you in a date night rut? This week we've picked five local ideas for a fun evening of retro romance.

Are date nights starting to feel like "the same old same old?"

While there are an abundance of places in the San Ramon Valley to take your mate (or prospective one) on a swanky date, this week we decided to shake up the old date night routine with picks for five retro date night destinations, with a bonus soundtrack.

Book your sitter and go!

1. Old school

“I'm puttin' on my top hat, tyin' up my white tie, brushin' off my tails…” Fred Astaire.

Two Left Feet Dance Center

194 Diablo Road, Danville

925-831-8111

www.twoleftfeet.com

White tie is not required, but if you want an excuse to return to a time when couples actually danced with one another, check out the Two Left Feet Dance Center, where you can learn everything from swing (East and West Coast) to a Nightclub Two Step.

2. Young love

“Each night I ask the stars up above, why must I be a teenager in love?” Dion and the Belmonts

Danville Bowl

200 Boone Court, Danville

925-837-7272

www.danvillebowl.com

Grab some friends for a double date, and feel like a teenager again when you go bowling until the wee hours at Danville Bowl’s Midnight Madness, every Friday and Saturday night from 10:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Just $15 per person for bowling shoes and three hours of unlimited bowling time (minimum four per lane). There is a snack bar and coffee shop, as well as a sports lounge that serves alcohol and has two pool tables.

 3. Move a little closer

“One summer night, we fell in love, one summer night I held you tight…” ~The Danleers

Westwind Solano Drive-In

1611 Solano Way, Concord

925-825-1951

www.westwinddriveins.com/theaters/solano.htm

It really doesn’t get more retro Americana than a drive-in movie. A double feature for $6.95 is a throwback itself by today’s multi-plex prices. You can bring your own food, a cozy blanket and chairs, and enjoy a double feature under the stars, or in the comfort of your car. There is a concession stand if the junk food urge strikes you. Cuddle up for romance, but keep it clean for the children.

 4. Let it Roll

Xanadu, your neon lights will shine

For you, Xanadu…” Olivia Newton John

The Golden Skate

2701 Hooper Drive, San Ramon

925-820-2525

www.thegoldenskate.com

Channel your inner Olivia Newton John, and grab a partner for a slow skate. Remember when you could go around and around and around for what seemed like forever. You can dazzle your date with your backward skating ability or limber shoot-the-duck, or simply try not to fall down. A DJ spins the tunes and provides the light show, just like you remember it. There is a snack bar and arcade to make the experience complete.

 5. Get Into the Groove

I got me a car, it's as big as a whale, and we're headin' on down to the Love Shack…” B-52s

Shboom Nightclub Rewind Fridays

2410 San Ramon Valley Blvd., Suite 130, San Ramon

925-837-9777

www.shboomnightclub.com

Shboom is far from a “shack,” and not in Atlanta, but on any given Friday night, you can hop on the retro highway, where “everybody’s movin’, everybody’s groovin’,” and enjoy some tunes from the 1970s to current hits. A dinner buffet is included from 6-8 p.m. with cover charge ($15).
