Dance Inspired Fitness

This week Cori Ann Lentz looks at the benefits of dance inspired fitness classes.

Music is an amazing motivator.

Dance inspired exercise classes help you feel the beat of your own heart within the beat of the music. These classes tap into the deeply rooted desires to be self confident, strong, beautiful, energetic and healthy, and to experience an overall quality of life.

Feeling the music as you move creates a rewarding, motivating, and healthy experience, while also embodying the fun factor. Challenging your mind with choreography results in feeling admiration for not only your body, but also for yourself.

Dance inspired formats vary and can be simple to learn, intense, or high impact.

When aerobics first exploded on the scene in the '80s and '90s, the format was basic, athletic and repetitive. To survive and maintain interest, exercise classes have evolved. With a variety of dance styles out there, it is easy to find a class that is in line with your goals, personal preference and fitness level.

There are several styles of Cabaret classes available now as well. A chair, or dare I say it, even a pole can be used as a fun, sexy prop, but in this style of class you will learn sultry new moves and get a great work out too.

No matter what form of dance-inspired fitness you choose, the benefits are clear.

The American Council on Exercise has stated, "Dancing is a weight-bearing activity, which can improve bone density (and thereby reduce the risk of osteoporosis) as well as improve muscle strength, coordination and balance."

In addition to the physical benefits of dance, it can also benefit your mental health.

The council also says "research has shown that dancing can play an important role in successful aging, as well as improve memory."

The mindset you embrace while dancing will help nourish your mind and body. It is important to bring a positive attitude into each class that you take. Enjoy the process and find a way to accept your body, feel good about your movements, and focus on your positive attributes.

Remain positive and accepting of yourself while you are learning a new routine. Recognize a task well done and focus on the improvements you are making with your form and your movements.

Sometimes people find it easier to watch during complicated movements for a few classes until they get it and you will find that each week you will be able to do more.  Be patient and encourage yourself and you'll make it!

Dance inspired fitness can be fun, exciting, and exhilarating, creating a positive, party atmosphere within each class. Shine with a genuine positive attitude and embrace dance as a form of fitness that you can truly love.
