It is very easy to picture Save Our Creek as a small (limited in size) group of Danville residents who have nothing better to do than sit around and pontificate pie-in-the sky ideas about how they can stop the big nasty developer from ruining Danville’s rural landscape.
But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Save Our Creek is incredibly organized and its leadership is comprised of people with core skills relevant to the cause. There are lawyers, prominent local businessmen, former CEOs, project managers and communications specialists. And combined, they fully believe that Save Our Creek has a strong and legitimate chance of stopping the proposed SummerHill Homes development of the Magee ranch land in Danville.
More importantly, Save Our Creek doesn’t only have the support of more than 700 petitioners, but it also has the full backing of various neighborhood communities as well as funding from more than 170 Danville, Blackhawk and Diablo residents. And it is putting this money to good use.
As announced on Oct. 26 of last year, Save Our Creek retained the services of well respected environmental and land use attorney Dr. Stuart Flashman – who is initially tasked with helping Save Our Creek legally respond to the much delayed Draft Environmental Impact Report from the Town of Danville. This legal work is already underway.
Likewise, via both the Save Our Creek fund and the independent financial backing of local neighborhood HOAs, the services of various consultant firms have also been contracted to evaluate such things as the hydrology, environmental and traffic impacts associated with the proposed SummerHill project. These findings will also be leveraged by Save Our Creek as it challenges the Town’s Draft Environmental Impact Report.
What does all this mean? Well if you like good odds, I would bet on Save Our Creek. If there is any local development likely to be stopped in its current form, this is the one. Save Our Creek’s lawyer is confident and Save Our Creek’s leadership is confident. And, ultimately, your money can help!
It is not enough to just put your name on the petition. SummerHill Homes has deep pockets and it is betting that Danville residents either don’t know or don’t care enough to donate money toward helping Save Our Creek take this to court, if needed. I know this isn’t true because the 170+ people who have already donated disprove this assumption alone.
So, to paraphrase something that Save Our Creek spokesperson and local Danville resident, Todd Gary, once said: why don’t you consider giving Save Our Creek the equivalent to what you would spend on a local dinner in Danville (including a bottle of wine)? It could really make a difference!
