As part of the $8.1 million rehabilitation/renovation of the in downtown Danville, several solar panels were affixed to the roof of the structure.
Just one month after the building re-opened for use, officials from Pacific Gas & Electric installed a Net Energy Meter (NEM) at the facility. The NEM allows electricity from the solar panels to be fed back into the energy grid, reducing the Town’s electrical consumption.
Town of Danville Senior Civil Engineer Michael Stella said it is exciting to have the panels online and to see the Town benefit from this green initiative.
“The energy we are getting from the panels doesn’t completely offset the building’s energy needs, but this helps reduce the Town’s use of fossil fuels which is in line with our sustainability goals,” he said.
The town is also in the process of working on a larger scale photovoltaic project which would involve setting up solar arrays at four locations around Town.
