Lighting of the Old Oak Tree

The Lighting of the Old Oak Tree will be held the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 29, from 5:15 to 8:30 p.m. in downtown Danville.  

In its 37th tree lighting has proven not only a tradition for local families, but a community favorite. 
 
“Every year this event brings people together, and whether this is your first year attending or your 37th year attending it’s a magical evening,” said Shelby McNamara, President and CEO of the Danville Chamber of Commerce.

At the start of the event, families will gather on Diablo Road around the town’s landmark oak tree, which is more than 350 years old, and will enjoy music provided by the Danville Girls Chorus and the San Ramon 
Valley High School Chorus led by Ken Abrams.  

Around 6:15 p.m., the magic begins when Father Christmas and the Snow Angel arrive, fairy dust is sprinkled and the Old Oak Tree is spectacularly illuminated -- a joyful and jolly kick off to Danville’s holiday season.

Event-goers can then bask in the spirit by following the Snow Angel and Father Christmas into downtown Danville.

Hum to street-corner musicians, stroll along tree-lined sidewalks, stop in for dinner or a cocktail at a local eatery, browse shops and enjoying holiday merriment and goodies such as hot cocoa, cider and tea provided by Danville’s merchants, who have decked-out their downtown shops with seasonal splendor.
 
“This event means so much to so many in Danville, and it’s a great chance for our merchants to show their appreciation to those who support them all year long,” said McNamara.  

“Danville is unique because of our small businesses and boutiques, our restaurants -- these all add to the town’s charm.” 
 
“We are so proud of our community,” said Marcia Harmon, owner of Danville’s Cottage Jewel,  president of the Discover Danville Association and Chair of the Lighting of the Old Oak Tree committee.

“So many of our merchants are participating in this event, each in a unique way, giving back to the community.  It really is heart-warming. We really encourage people to share in the spirit by supporting the participating local businesses and non-profit organizations who do so much for our town,” said Harmon.

Please note that the tree is located on Diablo Road and surrounding roads will be closed, but plenty of parking will be available at Danville municipal parking lots and the Community Presbyterian Church, located at 222 W. El Pintado Road.
