Are You Married? A Musical Outing

“Are You Married? A Musical Outing” is a solo autobiographical musical about crisis that strikes a male couple when one falls ill and they are victimized by the disabled partner’s family.   After months of battling with blackmailing and violent relatives, a corrupt lawyer, hateful hospital administrators, and negligent doctors, the pair emerge victorious by harnessing the power of love, humor, and music.

All 32 characters and 10 songs are performed by Robin Taylor, who lived this journey with his partner, John.  Robin was inspired to write this musical when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down California Proposition 8 and The Defense of Marriage Act in June, 2013.   Realizing that many in the country don’t understand why same sex couples need the protection of marriage, Robin is sharing the truth about what happened when he and John were plunged into a crisis created by John’s greedy, hateful family.  With the support of a team of lawyers in two states and the inspiration of a constant flow of music from their CD player, Robin and John defeated the system that put no value on their 15 year relationship.  It’s a tale of tears, tunes, laughs and, finally, triumph.

The performance will be in the sanctuary of Danville Congregational Church, 989 San Ramon Valley Blvd, Danville, at 7:30PM on Friday, January 24. A free-will offering will be accepted to benefit the organization “Marriage Equality, USA.”

Robin Taylor is an award-winning, 35 year veteran of Bay Area theatre. He has been recognized by the Bay Area Critics (principal performance) for the title role in “Where’s Charley?,” Dean Goodman for “The Cat” in “Honk,” and Dramalogue for the 6 member ensemble of “New Wrinkles.” He is in his fourth year as a Resident Artist at the Role Players in Danville. He has also appeared with Diablo Theatre Company, The Willows, Playhouse West, 42nd St. Moon, The Eugene O’Neill Foundation, The Lamplighters, Oakland Opera, Berkeley Opera, West Bay Opera, City Summer Opera, Theatreworks, and his own company, Musicals with Heart. He trained at the Juilliard School.
