Make Your Cat Hunt for Water!

Cats may be domesticated but they still have that hunter instinct. Try this tip to encourage your cat to drink more water and see if it makes a difference.

Does your cat like to drink water out of the sink, bath tub, or even the toilet bowl? Or maybe your cat isn't drinking as much water as you would like them to. Are you noticing that you don't need to refill their water bowl very often? Surprisingly, this behavior may have a lot to do with where you place their water bowl in the first place.

Dr. Baine, of Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care, suggests that his clients try placing their cat's water bowl further away from the food source. He says:

"In the wild, when cats hunt, their kill can be long distances from water. Therefore, they will go search out water. So by placing a water bowl away from where they eat and also away from litter boxes, they may be more likely to visit that bowl more frequently. It is helpful when you want a cat to drink more water. Drinking from shower stalls, bath tubs, and sinks is not because they are there, it is because it usually is farther away from their food source!"

Of course, if your cat is not drinking enough water make sure to have them checked by your veterinarian first. Low water consumption may be a sign of illness so it is very important to eliminate any potential health problems.

No wonder Fred likes to climb up and drink the dogs' water, at the opposite end of the house from his own. Guess we'll let him continue, as the dogs tolerate it.

Cats like variety of cool, fresh water. They'll drink outside, inside, in the toilet, in the shower - for ease of convenience as far as I can tell after 40 years with cats. You need to replace water several times a day to keep it fresh and cool - and clean the water dish daily. I found they like tall (6-8") glasses with wide necks the best to drink out of - my guess it is easier for them to drink as they can stand up while drinking - all four of my cats drink water out of a glass I leave on my desk - even when the glass is in the sphere of influence of the dominant feline they still brave the gauntlet to drink from it...

It all makes sense now . . . Or maybe Fred is just trying to show the dogs who's the boss!

Clean, fresh water is indeed very important for all of our furry friends. That is a very interesting observation about tall, wide neck glasses - I will have to see if my cat goes for it!
