Week In Review: Funding, Bicycles and Baskets

Some of the stories that made news this past week in the Danville and Alamo areas

Marine killed: Joshua Corral, a 2010 graduate from San Ramon Valley High School, was killed in action in Afghanistan on Friday. The U.S. Marine played freshman football at the school. His death was announced at Friday night's football game. There's no official word from the military yet on how Corral was killed.

Basket brigade: Students and volunteers filled 350 Thanksgiving gift baskets at Los Cerros Middle School on Thursday. The baskets will provide a holiday meal for 350 needy families. The baskets were filled in assembly line fashion and provided a lesson on volunteerism for the students.

School funding: Officials at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District said they will need to dip into their reserves for the remainder of the fiscal year due to reductions in state funding. State officials announced this past week that their revenues will be $3.7 billion less than projected. That will trigger $2 billion in automatic mid-year cuts to education and social programs. San Ramon Valley school officials expect to use almost $8 million of the district's $18 million reserve to bolster its $223 milliion budget.

Bicycle racks: A plan to increase the number of bicycle racks in downtown Danville is rolling along. The Town Council decided on Tuesday to look more closely at a consultant's plan at its Dec. 13 meeting. The proposal would increase the number of bicycle rack spaces from 121 to 200 and place those racks in 38 "high visibility" locations on public and private property, mostly along Hartz, Railroad and Prospect avenues.
