Last Week in Danville and Alamo: Danville Hotel Project Approved, Robbery Suspect Arrested and Teacher of the Year

A look back at news in Danville and Alamo from March 20 to 26 and a brief preview of stories this week.

San Ramon Valley High's 100th birthday was celebrated at an event at the Blackhawk Museum last weekend. A silent auction, live auction, dancing and memorabilia were all part of the gala that raised $100,000 for the school. See photos and read more.

We told you about local kids sending letters of hope to Japan. A Japanese woman in Fremont started a project at a local school to send letters to students in Sendai, Japan. More than 300 students, including at Danville and Pleasanton schools, participated. .

The Sentinels of Freedom earned national recognition for service to wounded veterans. Mike Conklin started the scholarship foundation for wounded soldiers shortly after Sept. 11, 2001. His organization has now gone national and helped dozens of veterans get back on their feet. Read more about their honor.

Danville Police announced that a man was arrested in Arizona in connection with a robbery at Chase Bank in Danville earlier this month. Dustin Burt, a 29 year-old Stockton resident, was identified by detectives as a suspect in connection with the March 7 robbery, said Police Chief Steve Simpkins. .

The Danville Hotel project moved another step forward. The Planning and Heritage Resource commissions unanimously approved the plans for the much anticipated project Tuesday night. Demolition could begin by next spring. Read more about the proposed project.

Donna Kenyon, a fifth grade teacher at John Baldwin Elementary in Danville, received the district's honor of being named Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Steven Enoch said that Kenyon had the traits of some of the best teachers he has ever known. . 

Teens shared their views with congressman Jerry McNerney at an event at San Ramon Valley High on Thursday. About 60 students, including students from Dougherty Valley High and San Ramon Valley High safe school ambassadors, attended the event to discuss education, the federal budget, healthcare, and civil rights. .
