Local Businesses Want You to Get on Your Bike

Danville Bike is teaming with other local businesses to host a family-friendly ride and Bike Fit Expo May 22.

Bike-to-work day may have been last Thursday, but May is National Bike Month.  That's appropriate, since Danville Bike is the latest local business to join the Danville Area Sustainable Business program and take steps to be more sustainable.

Joe Gutierrez, ‘Master Wrench’ and Owner of Danville Bike for the past 20 years, believes in giving back, whether it’s supporting the Adopt-A-Family-Bike program every December, or helping our environment.

Joe and his team easily identified more than 25 recommended practices from the Danville Area Sustainable Business checklist to be recognized among the growing list of Danville Area Sustainable Businesses

Saving energy and money, with T5 and T8 florescent bulbs and saving the Bay by making sure their cleaning products do not have Triclosan (often used in anti-bacterial hand soap) are common for those at the bike shop.

Joe and his staff start most mornings making a huge contribution to the environment.

Before the shop opens you can find the crew commuting on bikes, logging riding miles together around our scenic community.

Joe is often overhead saying, “Biking is for everyone, whether you’re six or 60 plus” and he wants more of us to discover the pleasure of two-wheeling around our neighborhood.

So much so, that Danville Bike is teaming up with The Studio, Giant Bikes, the Town of Danville, Street Smarts and Sustainable Danville Area to provide a free community event to learn how to get the right bike for your needs.

Joe invites the whole family to join us at the Bike Fit Expo on Sunday, May 22 between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Studio at The Rose Garden

The Giant 2011 Bike Collection, ranging from casual beach cruisers to high performance racing bikes will be available on training stands for visitors to experience the difference in the type of bikes.

Danville Bike will provide professional custom fittings, as well as demonstrations on clipless pedals, advice on bike saddles and helmet fittings for comfort and safety.

Team ClubSport will be on hand to provide information about local training and racing for cyclists of all ages and abilities. People who attend can also meet Giant Bike Representative and USA Cycling Coach, Kelli Poindexter who will be available to answer our most perplexing cycling questions.

During the event, 10 percent of the proceeds will go to a local school of your choice or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Other Danville Area Sustainable Businesses—Norm’s Place, La Boulange Bakery and Jules Thin Crust—were so inspired by this upcoming fun, family-friendly event, that they are offering Bike-to-Lunch Specials for two-wheeling customers who visit with their bike helmet on their way to the Bike Fit Expo.

You can also join Sustainable Danville Area for an informal family-friendly bike ride along the Iron Horse Trail to the Bike Fit Expo. We will start on the trail behind San Ramon Valley High School at 11:30 a.m. and arrive at The Studio by 1:00 p.m.
