First Dueling Piano Bar This Side of the Caldecott Coming Soon

A dueling piano bar called That Bar is slated to fill the space previously occupied downtown by Vinoteca, this summer.

The first dueling piano bar this side of the Caldecott tunnel is coming to downtown Danville, and it plans on packing a punch when it opens in early August.

The new establishment called "That Bar," will fill the space on Prospect Avenue vacated in January by Vinoteca.

Vinoteca closed its doors shortly after co-owner Leo Hartford passed away late last year. That Bar, under the ownership of Sherratt Reicher, is not affiliated with Vinoteca or any previous owners.

"Danville needed a change of pace," says co-general manager, Ashley Fox. "There's nothing around like it," concurs co-general manager Stephany Emig."The closest [dueling piano bar] is in San Francisco."

With dueling pianists, That Bar will be different from other restaurants and wine bars that have gained popularity in the Tri-Valley.

Thursday through Saturday nights after 9 p.m., visitors to That Bar will experience a musical duel between two piano players. Guests will request songs or veto requests by tipping the opposing piano player, requesting a new song for him or her to play.

It is expected that guests will sing-along too, so you'll want to warm up your vocal cords before visiting.

Aside from the dueling piano entertainment, That Bar will also have eight televisions, indoor and patio dining. With a full bar and an extensive menu designed by head chef Francisco Ruiz, formerly of The Blue-Footed Booby and Fat Cactus, the food will be reason enough to visit That Bar.

Open seven days a week, breakfast will be served starting at 11:30 a.m. when the kitchen opens. Serving food until 2 a.m. on weekends, That Bar will also be one of few late night eateries in the area. In Danville, Chow serves dinner until 12 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, while Marcello's is open until 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. In San Ramon, In-n-Out Burger is open until 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

One added twist to the menu are "competition" items, so you may want to bring your game face.

The "competition" items will include an enormous hamburger served with a time limit. Finish your burger on time and you may find yourself leaving with a new t-shirt that reads something like, "I finished that burger at That Bar, and it was that good!"

That Bar coming early August, 148 E. Prospect Ave. in downtown Danville.
